I have a 2001 4wd 790 w/o a mid pto. I want to run a front mount snowblower. I assume that there is a kit to install this option. I am a reasonably good wrench and would like to install this myself. Has anyone done this and how hard is it? Parts price?
Thanks!

790den,

I've never installed a mid PTO on any tractor. I can't help you there.

However, I wanted to let you know that you have other options available to you.

You can run a front-mounted snowblower using your rear PTO shaft. However, I'm not sure if Lorenz has ever made one for the JD 790.

See the link below.

790den,

Here's a picture of the mid-mount PTO kit that fits the John Deere 870, 970, and 1070 tractors. Your kit would be similar to this one.

This will give you some idea what you'll be working with.

See Ebay Item# 230168213569

The mid pto kit for low serial # tractors is part # BM17994. This part # has been updated so you will need to call your local Deere dealer for the actual price. Order part # AM875151 which is the pto shaft cover for when you are not using the mid pto.

You will definitely need the 790 shop manual or cd which should cover the installation and required torque values as well as other special requirements. ....

Jazak5,

Who copied who? hehehe.

I don't know if this patent is still protected. After 7 years have passed, anyone can build a copy. Patents are good for only 7 years, after which time the patent expires.

A patent is granted for a term of 20 years. This term begins on the issue date and generally ends 20 years from the date on which the original U.S. application was filed. ....

Kwschumm,

You're right......20 years. I fouled up there.

At any rate, there is little doubt that such a system was invented many, many years ago.

From the U.S. Patent Office.........

"After the patent has expired anyone may make, use, offer for sale or sell or import the invention without permission of the patentee, provided that matter covered by other unexpired patents is not used. The terms may be extended for certain pharmaceuticals and for certain circumstances as provided by law."

So now I'm wondering who invented this, and in what year? Oh, well.....that's for another discussion.

I'm not sure if "invent" is the right word.

People around here have been running front-mounted blowers from rear PTO's, or from engines mounted in the back of pickups since at least the early 30's.....

It used to be real common I'm told out on the prairies. Nobody wants to back down and back up a 3000' driveway even once let alone every time it snows or the wind comes up and it drifts back in.

Best of luck. ....

Northern Tool used to sell an 8' wide, front-mounted, snow blower for pickups that was driven by a 25HP (?) gas engine. Seems it was fairly expensive as I recall--like maybe $9K.

Another option is picking up one or two hydraulically driven snow blowers for a skid steer loader. I see these on eBay often relatively cheap. Then you could have one on the back and front! ....

Thanks. I am aware of this option but would prefer mid pto if that option is available.

My father had a 5' Erskine back in the early 70's that hooked to the rear pto and pulled forward. Even though the tires drove over the snow first it sure worked a lot better than you'd think; kind of like a box blade/snowblower. Erskine still makes such a unit, although the design has been upgraded thirty five years.

yes, i am in the process of installing the mid p.t.o. kit on my 2002 790 so i can run a front mount snowblower as well as mid mount mowing deck. good luck finding a kit. i was told by several j.d. dealers that there were no more kits anywhere ( according to their puters)and i got extremely lucky and found one on e-bay. i just completed step 1. remove the tow bar, left rear wheel, fender, and 2 guards. the kit seems complete (lots of parts) but the instructions are excellent and if you say you are somewhat mechanical you should be able to install it.i'm no great mechanic but i can follow instructions and plus i still have about 6 weeks before the crap ( oops, i mean snow) flies around here
good luck

Be sure everything rotates the right direction. I bought a Case-IH front mount mower off craigslist for my New Holland. Hooked it up to my mid-PTO---and it spun the reverse. Luckily it also came with a rear mounted PTO speed increaser. BUT my NH is 3 feet longer than the Case, and Case drive shaft would not extend---well it would, but vibrated so much that it destroyed itself spinning at 2,000 RPM. So now I'm working on a multi-section driveshaft mounted on a carrier beam that will go from the mower all the way back to the rear PTO. ....
