If I ever buy another snow blower I'll strongly consider the Erskine rear pulls. We had one 40 years ago and I can't remember a drift we couldn't handle. High drifts you can back into or drive beside and turn away to angle in. A lot easier on the neck. A little pricey, but very nice to use. Driving over the snow doesn't seem to matter as the weight is there to skim down close enough. Either that or something loader mounted. The Farm King 740 works great except for the pain in the neck.

Spike: Something else to ponder; is the bottom frame of your blade straight edged iron or rounded somehow. I only ask because if it's straight iron you might want to weld on a 2" or so 3'-4' long pipe. Then the frame will float a little better rather than dig into grass or something solid and catch if the curl is too aggresive. It will also stiffen up the frame. Good luck!

Yeah, the statioary type is what I was referrring to. They might work well in certain situations but I doubt they'd be all that good for finish work. I saw a good idea at my local TSC store once. They had 1/2 an R1 tire laid flat with the bottom sidewall removed as well. They were pushing it (through appropriately spaced cut-outs) with a regular fork lift. There was no ice scraping going on but it sure kept the fresh snow from building up. Thanks for your input.

kt, For another perspective, I went to see the Case/NH (NH 3040) dealer as well when I was trying to put a deal together. He had no CUTs on the lot at all. "They don't sell," was his response to my wanting to know why. After a few minutes it was easy to see why they don't sell. When I told him I was looking at a comparable Bobcat he actually said, "I won't be able to touch it." His price turned out to be higher before the loader was even included. Deere, on the other hand, has rows of CUTs (2305 - 15k w/loader & mower I think) so they seem to be competing. I don't believe this NH dealership is representative of the company at large, though, as I've tried to deal with him before with little success. If I was looking for 300 to 500 hp he has plenty of them on the lot.

John: If everything else seems equal with the tractors the most logical second step is to compare dealerships. A lot of guys would put that at the top of the list. Chances are all of the tractors are going to have power steering, but I don't know what you're looking at so it's worth asking. I like some weight to go with the hp but the funny thing is the cheaper models usually have more iron. Everybody's likes and dislikes vary but one would think at some point you would develop a "gut feeling" as to what seems to make the most sense for you. It's hard to know for sure. Can you demo a few models? Just my 2 cents worth.

I remember reading on this or another forum a few days ago about someone having a new CUT but hadn't run it over 2000 rpm's yet. My take was that he was trying to be nice and break it in gently. I also remember my JD service tech coming out for a minor adjustment on my 5101e just after delivery and him noticing a small drop of oil on the hood. "You're not working this tractor hard enough to seat the rings," he told me. It was just one speck but it reminded me back on the farm a new tractor started pulling full power on the first day and I don't recall a problem. Any comments?

Hi All:

Just to pick up on the foreign vs. domestic part of this conversation, I have always driven green. But having a Bobcat dealer within 5 minutes drive I decided to get a little more familar. Their take on it is that when Daedong Corporate won the Bobcat brass ring they've been gradually changing Kioti tractors over to Bobcat specs. I drove one of their ct40's w/cab, loader & hydro. To be honest, I didn't notice a thing about that tractor that wasn't just as productive or user friendly as the JD 4720 ehydro I used to own (except it lacked "Loadmatch" and the obvious hp difference). It does have other features that are either options or n/a on the Deere, though. If a guy was dealing on one I'm sure the money difference would be substantinal too. Around here, Bobcat service is considered top notch. Just my 2 cents worth.

Sorry to chime in late but I just paid $7000 straight out for an '82 1050 (see it at www.forksequipment.com until they take it down). Click on Products, Used Equipment then Compact Tractors 1 - 40 hp. It appears well taken care of and runs like a top with 1149 hours (no pst or hyd). Yours is obviously bigger but 2wd tractors are fast going the way of the dinosaurs. I wanted a small tractor to go where my 5101E can't very easily, like between parked cars in the winter to pull out snow to where the other one can get at it. I have a pair of chains that will fit this 1050 & will need to put on some front weights. John Deere now has 0% up to 36 months on used equip. so they're definitely feeling the pinch.

Aurbach, thanks for the comments. There are companies like you mentioned; Erskine, Puma and Deere's 4000 series to the name a few. The scary part is the price of these self contained units. For example, a trade price for my Farm King (used once and retails for $2995) was $8,000 to boot not including the quick hitch adapter. This unit has a 25 gallon 3 point hitch reservoir. I don't want one with the pto geared underneath, but they're pricey too. I'm wondering if I can get by without the extra money or ruining my tractor's hydraulics. Thanks again.

I've never been a big fan of putting chains on the front, but that's just me. My concern is if you're lacking in traction all around and the front grabs first it could give quite a jolt to the MFWD, being undersized to pull the entire load. If you have a FEL, that's usually adequate front ballast. My dealer encourages the more ballast on the rear, within reason, the better; especially on MFWD tractors. The brakes should handle turning issues.

It's cheaper to buy the right size first than it is to upgrade in a year or two. Horsepower is usually cheaper (per hp) when added to the base model.

Guage wheels on a box blade are always a nice touch when you need to fine tune something like that. You might want to disconnect your top link too (if you go the bb route).

One thing about front hydraulic snow blowers: there is a BIG difference between pto driven, independent and self contained vs. using the tractors hydraulic system. CUTs seldom have high ehough flow GPM's or large enough reservoirs to provide adequate pressure. Also, if you have a loader some of them are quick attach in lieu of the bucket. A big drawback to these units is the price.

Something else along these lines happened just a week or so ago. I was talking to my dealer's service manager in the shop about a seperate issue when he interupted the convesation to point to a pile of shiny green metal lying on the counter next to him. "By the way," he said, "we have to replace the brackets on your loader sometime when it's in here. The last time it was here we were wondering why your brackets were so bent. We figured out they were installed BACWARDS at the factory!" (563 Loader) This one wasn't the dealer's fault.

I've noticed other types of attachments online that appear identical to Erskine Attachment's line. SSS claims to be the inventor of this particular gadget, though. I've seen the same thing on Ebay for $1995 compared to SSS $1895. It might be worth a call to Erskine anyway as they're only about 60 miles from me. They are owned by Bobcat.

Call me a hopeless cynic, but I have a hard time believing the government would really tell the American people what they think, much less publish it for public disemination. I KNOW they're not the least bit concerned about right wing extremists. Military weoponry is several times more sophiticated than is published to put down uprisings, etc. (gigantic microwave diffusers, for example).
