Lost Traction
Lost Traction

Tractor was parallel to side of hill and traction was lost (lousy R4s) so had to drive down the hill to keep from going over sideways. Then got stuck and couldn foot t back up the hill.

R4 tires totally plugged with wet clay, no traction to be found, tractor stuck and can foot t back up hill.

Rollover hill

See previous pics for prelude, this is the hill that caused all the trouble. Doesn foot t look like much, but when using R4s in clay and no traction is available watch out!

Another view of hill that caused lost traction and rollover. Turns out this hill was made from the spoils of basement excavation and was very soft.

New R1 tires and BoDozer grapple
New R1 tires and BoDozer grapple

After losing traction and rolling the tractor (see previous pix) the dealer traded my old R4s for some new R1 tires, set to the widest possible position. These tires are taller and set a lot wider. Notice how they almost fill out the rear fenders.

These are mounted on 8 position rims set to the widest position. Look how wide these babies are! They should be much more stable and offer far better traction than the R4s I had.

Battery Corrosion Prevention
Battery Corrosion Prevention

My JD dealer gave me one of these special battery caps that will vent the battery gases underneath the tractor to prevent radiator and oil cooler corrosion. Cheap insurance. Notice the tube on the left that vents to the bottom.

Interests:
Tree farming, home automation & security systems, realtime embedded programming with the QNX operating system, collecting and restoring pinball machines, all things mechanical (unless it has a Honda engine in which case I'd rather take it to the dump)
Equipment:
2003 JD 4310 MFWD, eHydro, Dual SCV valves and 3rd, 4th, and 5th SCVs, Power Beyond, loaded R1s (replaced R4s which had lousy traction in our clay soil), 430 loader w/HD bucket and cutting edge, 47 backhoe, Borgford BoDozer grapple, Borgford Handi Hauler carry-all, Top and Tilt, iMatch, MX5 rotary cutter, Frontier 72" box blade, Bad River 3-pt hitch to 2" receiver adapter, Jinma chipper, and a Brush Bandit 150XP chipper.
Property:
15 acres of dense douglas and noble firs. Our land is a Christmas tree farm that has run amok. Besides the normal tree thinning, cutting, and stumping work the current projects are building a set of terraced retaining walls and constructing a one mile trail through the forest. The next project is clearing land and building a steel building to house all the equipment.
