Is the 790 4x4 enuff tractor to mow with a 6ft bush hog/box blade or should I look for a good deal on a 9904x4? thanks

A 6' standard duty cutter would work on the 790. A medium duty cutter might be marginal. What are you cutting? ....

Since you don't know what you'll be getting in to I'd advise a medium duty cutter. The medium duty cutters are stronger and can cut woody material up to several inches thick. Between the two tractor choices you gave I'd think the 990 would be the better choice. The MX series cutters from JD are rock solid units but they aren't the cheapest by any means. My MX-5 has been awesome. ....

The 790/990 are simple and very reliable machines. It should go 10 years without much trouble. Of course operator care is most important. Any machine will break with abuse. ....

Check the Deere web site. It says the 790 can handle a 4 or 5 foot rotary cutter.
It can take a 6 foot rear finish mower but not a 6 foot brush hog. ....

I'm looking at a JD implement brochure that says the 790 can handle the LX4/5/6 4-6 foot light duty cutters or the MX5 medium duty cutter. JD has always had trouble getting their story straight. Others have posted here about using 6' cutters on the 790 successfully but it all depends on what they're cutting and how fast they want to go. ....

So true, especially when it comes to the 790. I am still not sure how much horsepower the thing has.
The 790 is close to the weight and wheel base of my 4115 and a 6 foot single blade cutter would be a lot of leverage hanging out back there. ....

I would recommend the 990 for a 6 foot rotary cutter. The 790 is just too small and does not have the hp to maintain rpm in heavier brush. ....

The 790 is too small for a 6 ft rotary cutter. Even my 955 is too small HP wise. It is fine for straight grass, in a flat field but I would not want to mow any hill side and trees. ....

Tho other option is to run a smaller tractor, like the 790, but instead of a rotary mower use a flail mower.
YOu can get away with a little less tractor because it a) requires less grunt, and b) it's not nearly as long, front to back, as a rotary cutter, so there is less leverage.
According to the Rhino webiste you can run a 62" cutter with as little as 25hp, and a 74" with only 30hp.
They cut a little slower than a rotary can, but are also a bunch safer to use in public, since they cannot fire debris the way a rotary could.

I have a 790 and use a 72 inch box blade with no problem(my rear tires are loaded). I to was looking at a 990 but that machine puts the trailering issue up a notch 10,000 lbs safly. I have put my 419 loader/790/7 series hoe//box blade on the same trailer a 990 would be way beyond a 7,000 lbs trailer,the base weight alone is up there.
Next year I am looking at a goose neck so I can put more equipement on/wood chipper/saws/tiller a one stop shop deal. ....
