I just purchased a 2003 4410 E-hydro w/ 430 FEL, 4wd,mid pto,4 ft. brush hog and a york rake with approx. 650 hrs.
I bought it for $12,000.00. Does that sound like a fair price?
I did not get the manual with it, and have a question.

I'm not sure how to engage the middle PTO. Can you help me on this?

Thanks,
TMeek

First, engage the mid pto knob, then flip the same switch you use for the rear pto. That engages the clutch. Do not turn on pto switch first or you will get lots of grinding. The knob engages the gear and then the switch engages the clutch. You also need to be sitting in the seat. ....

Thanks I tried this with no success, the mid pto still does not turn by looking at it .When I turn the mid pto shaft by hand it turns freely, is this normal or a sign a major internal problem with in this area. ....

I'd suspect an electrical glitch before a mechanical problem. On the right fender is a little light. When you try to use the mid pto does the light flash in a pattern? If so, that's an error code. Let us know what the pattern is and we can decode it for you. This is a shot in the dark, I don't have a mid pto and don't know if it will generate a code. ....

I've had my 4310 kick out an error code for PTO issue before. So hopefully his will. Fortunately, it was a user error issue. I just needed to shut off and restart the tractor to reset the system. ....

Thanks for the advice I am going to check this first thing in the a.m. (3rd shifter) to see if this error code comes up. ....

I tried the mid again again numerous times with no luck and no blinking light code. One dealership technician said it might be the switch itself or it may be a damaged wire that feeds the mid , but he also seemed to think it was an electrical problem. Thanks again ....

These tractors have wiring harnesses that run underneath and the wires have been known to hang a bit too low. They can then get caught and ripped loose. If you crawl underneath and give all the wiring and connections a good inspection you might find the problem. ....

The JD tech. I talked to mentioned the same you did ,to go over the udercarriage for loose wires. I'm going to do this as soon as I get a chance and hopefully I can find the problem , without having to bring it in .I'll let you know how I make out . Thanks again . ....

I checked all the undercarriage wires and wire connections and everthing appeared to be alright. I also received the 4410 owners manual and checked all the fuse layouts and all seemed fine, but I did notice one of the relays was missing in the K-4 opening. They do not show the relay layout in the manual, but I did look up the relay part online for the mid PTO as RE73096. I checked the relays in the machine and only two started with the RE , the rest appeared to be an aftermarket or a foreign part . I'm hoping this relay or the switch itself is the only problem with this mid PTO.I wonder if a service manual would show more detail on this area. Thanks again. ....

The question and concern that comes to mind is, why was the relay removed in the first place? Be careful when you reinstall it. Hopefully the previous owner removed it because he or she did not use the mid pto and did this to prevent them grinding the pto gears due to out of sequence activation of the pto switches. ....

From what I see in the manual, the K5 relay is for an optional trailer connector that you may not have. The relays that work the mid pto are K14, K15, and K16. They are the smaller relays in the lower right corner. You could try swapping the upper six relays with the lower six to see if the problem changes. You could have a bad relay.

The tech manual lists K4 as the Engine Run Relay (?) There are three relays involved in the mid-pto circuit. K14 is the interlock relay, K15 is the lockout relay, and K16 is the mid pto relay. ....

The k-4 relay must be for the optional trailer connector because my engine runs great.I did take off the fuse box shroud and saw the 6 smaller relays on the bottom right ( as jd110 said)and the 2 on the far right were missing ,along with the orange strip that hold them in. ....

continued: so I'm hoping it is just the two missing relays . I know the original owner said he never used the mid,but it's beyond me why any one would remove the 2 relays and the orange hold strips ,unless there was a problem .I'm hoping I am wrong. I also did notice a lot of mud(dirt) in the fuse area and between the relays, almost like at one time the machine was buried in mud or something.I am slowly starting to figuire this out with all of your help. Thanks again. ....

Yes, the tech manual shows the relay layout and descriptions as well as a complete wiring diagram. Be aware that JD manuals are known for typos - like the possible one in the tech manual that says relay R4 is the engine run relay when that doesn't jive with what you see on yours. ....
