I agree with Murf. The place I see them stick usually is the brake shaft that goes into the final drive(axle) housing. Unhook the control rod and spray around the shaft, then keep working the brake levers(#1 & #7in the attachment) back and forth until they free up.

How is your air filter? A clogged air filter can cause smoke, low power and oil consumption.

The 4x20 series are very similar. There are definate tire and wheel size differences, but I did a random parts comparison, and found that almost all parts will interchange between the models. John Deere has always done a good job of "over building" their tractors. I have always felt that if you buy the lower horsepower model within a series, that the drivtrain components will be alot stronger than they need to be. In regards to engine horsepower, these are not electronic fuel systems. There is no "chip" to change horsepower. The different power levels are acheived with different fuel pumps, injectors and governor adjustments.

You should have a dipstick on the rear of the tractor. It is above the pto shield to the left, I believe.

Wow, It sure sounds like the dealer didn't prep this one very well. I don't like the sound of all those problems either, but all of that should have been taken care of when it was predelivered! Before you took delivery. As far as fit and finish, The 5X03 series are designed to be price fighter models to compete with some of the cheaper brands out there. I guess they cut some corners in the frills and cosmetics. Hopefully the mechanical problems were flukes of new model and lack of dealer prep.

The seat switch is involved in the pto circuit. The switch could be going bad, or if you or your operator is light in weight the switch could lose contact. Also if you are on steep hill and leaning in the seat too hard, the switch can lose contact. You mention a blown fuse. This leads me to suspect a bare wire or pinched wire somewhere. There is also a control module in this circuit. This module is very reliable, but always could be potential problem. I would first look at the wiring to the electromagnet on the pto lever. Hardwood, John Deere is using the 2520 over again. The current model 2520 is a subcompact with a limited category I hitch. I am not sure which version jdjerry has, But I assume it's the subcompact version. Either way, my guess is a linkage adjustment problem.

I would take the regulator along to be tested also. A defective alternator can cause overcharging and undercharging. You also could have a broken wire between alternator and regulator. I would say chances are good the battery will be ok when the charging problem is resolved.

The front hub is fairly easy to repair. After you remove the wheel, remove the six bolts holding the hub on. Then remove the hub assembly. On the inside of the hub is a gear and some bearings that are retained by either snap rings or a locking jam nut. Just remove the bearins and gear. Then pull the spindle out of the outer bearing. The seal is now accessible.

I have to agree with the radiator clogged internally theory. That is the biggest cause of chronic overheating, although these radiators when new were actually oversized and could stand alot of dirt before overheating. External clogging of the cooling fins can be a problem even if it looks clean. If you have access to a high pressure washer, you might try cleaning with that. Just be sure to direct the flow of water straight from front ot back and back to front. Any angle here can bend over the fins and restrict air flow also. The best way to pressure wash is to remove the radiator from the tractor so you can toroughly clean it. One last thing you don't want to overlook is the water pump. Typically they don't cause problems if the bearing and seal are good, but I have seen the impeller come loose a couple of times and the coolant will not circulate. That reminds me. Have you changed the thermostats? There are two of them on this engine. If you drain the radiator and loosen the fan belt, remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump on the right side of the engine. Then spin the fan by hand and you should be able to heat the impeller sloshing in the coolant left in the water pump. If you do, then I would say the water pump is ok if it isn't leaking or the fan doesn't wobble indicating a loose bearing.

Aaron, does the engine sound any different when you are spraying the ether in? Do you know how low the compression is? I have absolutely seen some of these engines get so low on compression that they won't start even with ether. If that is the case, the only solution is major overhaul. With that said, have you tried loosening any fuel lines at the injectors? You sould see a definite spurt of fuel every stroke if the pump is producing proper fuel pressure. If you are getting lots of white smoke while cranking, I'll bet the fuel system is OK and low compression is the culprit. Good Luck!

Definitely check the fuses, but also be sure the battery is connected properly. If the battery terminals are connected backwards, the engine will still crank but the timer delay module for the fuel shut off solenoid will not operate.

Actually the 870,970,and 1070 switched to wet disk brakes. Normally these brakes can be expected to last a very long time. I don't recall ever replacing any since 70 series came out. I would suspect contaminated transmission fluid or improper type of fluid. Wet brakes(and clutches) require fluid that has friction modifiers built in for smooth operation of clutches and brakes. I would recommend changing the fluid and filter. While you are at it, remove the sump screen and see if there is any brake lining material on the screen. If the fluid is contaminated with water or other incorrect fluids, you may need to change the fluid twice to get rid of all contaminants. If you do happen to find brake material on the screen, the final drives need to be removed to access the brakes. There are three brake disks per side and the disks cost around $75 - 80 each. ther are also separator plates that may need replacing at around $40 each. Good luck!

I assume you have looked at all of the linkages? If the rockshaft just dropped while you weren't using it, I would suspect a broken or disconnected piece of linkage. I believe there is a feedback rod that connects to the left rockshaft arm. I would look there first.

Sorry about the multiple replies, but I keep coming up with other ideas. An original JD manual is still availble new from John deere also. A paper manual is number SM2035 and costs around $125. A CD version, SM2035CD is available also for around $65. This option is less expensive and you can print out the pages you want to work with. Call your local dealer for his exact prices. They may vary.

The 5x25 series is a big jump in size and weight from the 4000 series. The 5225 and 5325 use the same style engine as the 4x20 series although in a 5 cylinder version. The 5425 and 5525 use the older proven design engine. If I were you and was going to make the leap to 5000 series, I would go with the 5425 for the heavier duty engine. Or if that is too much of a strain the budget, I would consider a used 5210 or 5220. They are both available with the power reverser also. I don't see too many changes from the ten and twenty series that would make me spend the extra money on the 25 series anyway. the only problem I can think of to watch for on a used one is to make sure the brakes are not dragging. If you can't push it easily on level ground in neutral, you have a problem that will require removal of the final drives. I've seen quite a few of those. Just my opinion.

I have DSL and on internet explorer, the page loads in about 3 seconds. I don't see much difference in the ads versus the forum load times. I also have the Opera browser and it loads in about 4 seconds. I am also running a 3 gig pentium 4 and 1 gig of ram. I think that helps also.

I agree with the idea of a bad sleeve/liner. This tractor used a 329 cubic inch engine which seems to be prone to cavitation of the liners, especially if the coolant has been neglected. Cavitation is when the liners get pitted on the outside of the liners and the pits can go all the way through to the cylinder bore. This condition also puts oil in the cooling system as the piston rings are wiping oil from the bore, it can push oil through the hole into the water jacket. you can see this leak the same way as a bad oring, except the coolant will drip down the inside of the liner rather than the outside. While the oil pan is off, be sure to rotate the crankshaft because if a piston is in the lower part of the bore, it can block the leak when you are looking. Unfortunately, this is a pretty expensive repair.

What speed does your engine idle at? If it is idling too slow, it will vibrate excessively. If memory serves me correctly, I think it should idle around 1400 rpm. The steering column should't have much "slop" in it but there is a bearing kit available to repair it. AM107081

That belt should be a M41960 that measures 1/2" X 102.3". I don't mean to contradict Murf 'cause he is usually right, but it sounded kind of long so I double checked. Even 102.3 sounds long to me for a single bladed deck, but that is what I came up with.
