The issue occurs more the longer the tractor sits without running I have noticed. When I go to start it it turns over and starts great. Runs in idle ok, rev up the engine and it smokes, spitting and sputtering and has a hard time running smooth.

I dont know much about diesels, oil leaking into the cylinders? Is there injectors that might need cleaning? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

The symptoms may not clearly point to water in the fuel, but the connection with it sitting does. ....

Come to think of it, this issue started recently after refilling my two diesel 5 gallon tanks. I filled them up in town at a "reputable" gas station. Could their diesel have enough water in it to cause this effect? Could water from condensation in the tanks or tractor tank be occuring?

....

I'd be surprised if it was a water issue. It's easy to check, almost every new diesel has a water separator, most with a glass bowl on them. If there is water in the system it will be clearly visible as a seperate layer in the bottom of the bowl. If there is no sight glass, just get a funnel and a clear container and drain off some fuel into the container. If you let it settle for a few seconds the water will readily seperate from the diesel.

I'd be more likely to suspect some other contamination, such as gasoline in the diesel.

Best of luck. ....

Here is something I forgot to mention (might be a big clue) the oil level does drop about 1/4 of a quart every week or two. I do not see any apparent drip spots on the ground, on top of the mower deck or otherwise

I will check the water issue. ....

It could be a very big clue.

How many hours of operating the tractor is a "week or two"?

Secondly, did the oil consumption start at the same time as the other symptoms? If so I'm thinking it's sucking oil into the engine at higher revs and burning it. At idle there is a lot less vacuum on the crankcase and so very little oil being drawn into the engine, as you speed up, more vacuum means more oil. The burning motor oil would certainly explain the rough running and sputtering.

Is there an oily buildup in the end of the exhaust pipe? Usually if an engine is burning much oil it's kind of oily/greasy in the end of the pipe.

Best of luck. ....

I have only used it to mow the lawn during this time and that takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and I mowed three times so say 5 or 6 hours.

After I rev it up to high speed it spits for a minute or so and slowly goes away.

I will check the end of the tail pipe. ....

The oil loss could indicate a leaky head gasket. ....

How is your air filter? A clogged air filter can cause smoke, low power and oil consumption. ....

the air filter is approximately 50 hours old and I recently blew it out with air. Does not appear to be clogged or terribly in need of changing.

I checked the end of the exhaust and it is not oily as I think MURF thought of.

I changed the oil this weekend as it was at 50 hours so I will watch the oil consumption closely.

The fuel is only about 1/8th full and I have to refill diesel tanks so we will see if fuel had anything to do with it, I will get that from a difference station. ....
