Hello, As anyone ever had a problem with there tractor not being able to reverse when pressing to he pedal?

I was working clearing some trees and then I couldn't back up any more. I remove the cover underneath the pedal and noticed that they each have a sensor (Potentiometer).

Step #1:
I disconnected each of the cables to the travel sensors and tested with my ohm meter to make sure that they were both the same, and they were ( Pedal Not Pressed = 6.8 Kohms, Pedal pressed 2.3K Ohms).

Step #2: I temporarily connected the cable that was connected to the forward pedal sensor to the Reverse pedal. When pressing the reverse pedal the tractor when forward. This proved that the reverse pedal sensor was OK.

Step #3: While looking underneath the tractor I noticed that two wires were pulled out of the connector that was originally connected to the reverse pedal main harness. Before reconnecting the cables back I tested the Ohms from the connector on the main harness going to the hydrostatic controller. Both the Forward and Reverse measured 7.2 Ohms. Reconnected the cables and It still doesn't WORK!!!!

Step #4: Tested the short piece of cable that connects from the pedal sensors to the main harness to make sure that continuity of the wires were Ok. The black wire measured (0) Ohms which makes sense, however the other purple wire measured ~100 K Ohms, which doesn't make sense. Since, the forward cable which works had the same reading I think its OK.

Q1. Does anybody know if they have an internal resistor inside the connector?

Q2 Has anybody else experience a similar situation with there hydrostatic tractors?

q3 I don't have the technical manual for my tractor, so I don't really know on the system is wired up? Can anybody help me.

Thanks

First of all, welcome to our little slice of the 'net there neighbour!!! :)

I take it from your screen name you're also a pilot? If so are you close to CYSB or Coniston, I get that way a bit now & then.

It sounds like you're on the right track, while I'm a JD neophyte, I think based on how it happened, and what you were doing, you're correct in following wires.

In fact even without the benefit of a wiring diagram or shop manual, I would suggest you have a crawl underneath it and have a real good look around, if you yanked 2 wires out of a connector, it's a safe bet they weren't the only two that got disturbed, it could be more wires are not conected, but also not dangling and obvious either.

If there's no dealer near you, give me a shout, I've got a friend who owns a Greene store, I can get the info and pass it along if nothing else.

The only other thing that comes to mind though, is that you should have 3 wires (strictly from memory) to the pedal for each of forwards and backwards. They should be, ground, power, and return, and the pedal sensor, in conjunction with the power supply varies the amount of voltage to tell the HST how far the pedal has been moved.

If you have no flashing lights, I'd bet you have no power either, without power there's nothing to pass along an error signal.

Best of luck. ....

You've done a good bit of troubleshooting. Is there a flashing code on the display to the right of the seat? Post the code sequence (four flash combination of short and long flashes) and I'll tell you what the tech manual says. ....

When you back up do you turn around to watch where you're going? I did on my 4310 and I found that by shifting my weight on the seat I was causing the seat safety switch to stop me from going back. Once I realized what was happening (and it took a long time) I focused on keeping my weight centered on the seat while in reverse and the problems stopped. ....

The fault code is: * - - - (short, long, long, long)fault code10. Valve output to foward or reverse coil. I tested the coil as per the technical book and they are both within specification (6.8 ohms). I testted the wire continuity from the controller to the solenoid and they were Ok.

Does anyone know if you can get a 3rd party diagnostic tool to talk to the ECU (Electronic control Unit)? I believe that the John Deere uses the CANopen bus technology which uses SAE J1932 Communication protocol standards. John deere will only sell the diagnostic tool to there dealers! ....

I had a similar problem not too long ago while bush hogging some heavy over grown fields with a lot of dried stalks and weeds. Turns out a stalk got jammed up under the forward pedal and all was well until I tried to reverse. Then the malfunction code started flashing and the tractor would not go forwards or backwards. Deere has a safety feature built into the pedal system that will only allow one pedal to be actuated at a time. If you press both or one is already actuated when you press the other, the system shuts down. After I took a look up under the floor boards, found the stalk jammed under the forward pedal and removed it; all was well. You may also want to check for any wires that may have been torn loose under the tractor. This is a frequent problem if you are in heavy brush and do not have the rental upgrade kit installed. ....

This happened to me last year, I found that the wires were actually pulled loose from the snap-together coupler. You have to look really closely to find the trouble. After you do find and fix it, make sure you tuck the wires back up and keep them in place with wire-ties or tape. Also, if you can find or make a shield for beneath the platform this will help alot. Good luck on the fix! JP. ....
