I have a woods rotary cutter that came standard with a steel shield/guard bolted to the back. The optional chain shielding kit (I think) is around $200.
What are the advantages to having chain shielding on a rotary cutter as opposed to the standard steel guard?
Would you recommend getting the chain shielding?

I hope some of the old guard can answer the question as I'm curious myself. Typically, a hinged steel guard will follow the highest land point. So debris can escape while a chain guard conforms to the ground better. I'd also think the hinged steel guard might snag if you backed up where a chain guard would allow you to back up.
I hope someone with experience can tell me if I'm right or not. I'd like to know. Just finished taxes so not sure how the mind is working. ....

I believe the steel guards are the cheap way to cover lliability issues. In really thick grass, they can keep too much in and cause bogging. If you do any rough mowing and back up, they bend way to easily. Chains are nice, but if safety is not a realistic issue for your intended use, you can always run the way mowers used to came, with nothing. I use nothing since it came that way, and I back up a lot over all trees I can force the mower over. I also do not mow near any people or roads. ....

In addition to the above points; the chain guards (especially the front chain guard) will protect YOU and others from objects discharged from the cutter with tremendous force. My uncle almost lost an eye from being hit from an object thrown out the front of the cutter. Chains can absorb most if not all of the energy of pretty nearly all of the objects thrown from a cutter and not incurr the dents and damage that the rubber or steel guards do as well. In my opinion, they are a MUST. ....

Randy hit right on the head.
The front guard is IMHO more important than the rear ones. There is rarely anyone closer to the cutter than the operator themselves, they are therefore at the most risk also.
We are not permitted to use rotary cutters on most sites at all because of safety concerns. This is why you will rarely see anyhting but flail type cutters working on roadsides and the like.
The other item that I believe all rotary's should have but don't, is a front scatter shield. A small piece of plate that basically just extends the top of the mower case forward will prevent most debris from going anywhere but straight ahead under the tractor instead of up at the operator.

The front guards are worth it. Loose an eye and you would pay anything to get it back. I have been hit several times in the head with pieces of sticks. I lean forward almost without thinking when looking backwards and mowing rough stuff. ....

I've taken to wearing a logging helmet with face shield and ear muffs when cutting. It's just not worth it not to. ....
