I was using my 4500 today to move some dirt for a water feature I am building. I was on and off of it numerous times restarting it on each occasion and it worked fine.

I got back on it to move some more dirt and went to start it and it clicked once then nothing. I wiggled the ground cable, checked battery connections, checked fuses and still noting. Also the lights and flashers do not work and no indicator lights come on when the key is turned on. I just replaced the battery and terminal clamps over the winter as well.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Determine if you have a fusible link... ....

I guess I need some direction as how to determine if I have a fusable link. My operators manusal makes no reference to it that I can find

Follow the cables off your battery and see if you find a lump before your reach the starter...

If there is no fusible link...then...

The other thing to check...Is to disconnect your battery and take a battery brush to the battery terminals ans the insides of the cable connectors...Then reconnect everything and try starting it... ....

Have you tried jumping the battery? A new battery can fail with little notice also. kt ....

I tired cleaning the terminals as Paul suggested and noting. Still no lights or indicator lights when turning the key on.

I tested the battery with a tester in it has power (it read 12.8) I also tested to see if there was power going to the starter and there was.

I dont know if there is another main fuse somewhere that may have blown??

I also checked all the fuses in the box and they were all OK.

It is a good thing I had borrowed my brother in laws 2110 with a backhoe to do the digging or I would have gotten nothing done. I also cant mow the lawn because I run my finish mower off of the Deere. :( ....

Maugus63,

It's beginning to look as though you have a faulty ground connection. Since you have voltage to the starter, the problem seems to be with the ground, rather than with the hot side of the circuit.

Check your ground wire from the tractor's battery, down to the connection point on the frame.

Looking at my 4410 eHydro electrical schematic, you might try looking at the K2 starter relay. (it may not be labeled K2 on your machine but the relays should be in the fuse compartment.

The start relay operates with switched power hence the noticeable failure when you turned the key. The relay modules in the fuse panel are mostly all pretty much the same or identical.

You might try marking one of the relays and swapping out with another relay off of the fuse panel. If your problem goes away and or transfers to another area, you have the bad relay identified.

Sometimes just giving all of the relay modules a good tap to hopefully free up a stuck or hanging relay module works too.

I've had to do something like this a time or two flying helicopters that did not function properly on shutdown or runup. A good thump on a relay panel usually brought a pump or other needed system to life immediately. :O) ....

I'm leaning the same way...I believe JD CUTs have
1. system grounds
2. battery ground
3. wiring harness ground

You will need to check them all... ....

Does your battery voltage hold when you try starting it? Do you have any way to check the amp draw on the starter? If the voltage is dropping when you are trying to crank or you have a heavy amp draw you probably have a problem with the starter. It is possible the (I ASSUME, JD has the typical design) bendix have locked engaged.

There are ways to possibly break it loose and test it on the tractor but they have killed people due to tractor cranking. I doubt your starter is that hard to remove and test it on a bench. kt

It sounds to me like your ignition switch is faulty, especially since you stated that nothing comes on when you turn the switch. A wiring diagram would tell you what terminals to check with the key in different positions.

A couple of things come to mind. First, there is a fusible link on this tractor. It is located near the starter. On the same post that the battery wire is attached to the starter, there is another wire that is about 5-6 inches long with two connectors attaching it to the harness. The key switch gets current from this link by way of the F1 fuse. There should always be 12 volts at the F1 FUSE. If not, then the fusible link is probably bad. Second, in your first post, you mentioned replacing the battery terminal clamps. Be sure to check the connection between the clamp and the cable. I have seen these clamp on ends have a poor connection due to corrosion cause a lot of problems. They should be considered a temporary fix only until you can get a new complete cable. ....
