I have just under 2600 hrs on my JD4700 and the starter is giving me problems. Took the starter to the local rebuild shop, needs a clutch kit but we can't get the kit it's a dealer item only you get the kit and we will install it.
Went to the JD dealer, yup we can get the clutch kit it is $315. before tax and shipping (OH MY), How much for a new starter, $570. before tax and shipping (WOW). Now I can get the clutch kit $315. + 5% tax + shipping + rebuild shop = $438.75 and have one half of a new starter. Then next yr. when the other half of the starter goes I can come back and do all of this over again, OR I can buy a New starter for $600. Called around to the local Napa and a diesel dealer, nope can't get that starter it's a dealer item only. Grrrrr, OK I'll buy the new starter.
Thanks for reading my ramblings,
David

Sell the tractor cheap and make the money on parts. Lets see where have I seen this before? Well any Japanese company. Will the Yanmar starter cross over? It may be cheaper. ....

David, as mentioned, there is usually a cross-over, you just have to find it, they did NOT custom design a starter for one machine.
We found out by fluke that the prices can vary wildly depending on the application the part is destined for also. We were doing a job in the Islands and a starter gave up, actually the bendix stuck and it spun for a few hourswith the motor running, when we took it to the local shop the guy commented on how ours was a different colour than all the others he sees. When I asked what he meant he produced a starter just like mine, but grey instead of black painted. When I asked him what it was from he said "Almost every boat around here, they all run a Yanmar diesel.". Then he noticed the Kubota tag on it, said he had never seen a Kubota ship engine before. I said "were even, I've never seen a tractor with a propeller before.".
Bottom line, the starter was about half price. Fishermen don't have a big budget I guess.
Best of luck. ....

Yep, the repair parts game. It's a big money maker for dealers in many industries. Compare a Motorcraft genuine alternator against an aftermarket item and you'll find a significant difference.
Do what you can to find a cross match as you'll save money. Part of the problem is the supply chain involved. Deere buys the alternator from Yanmar who probably bought it from someone else. Then Deere sells the part to a dealer who sells it to you. Everyone has to make their cut. The more stops, the more cuts, the higher the list price. ....

Thank you all for the replies and the Info. Guess I should have made the post a few days ago. Starter came in today, I put it on and am up $ running.
I should have known better, I've been telling all my friends to check the internet/Tractor forums first before they buy because they're a wealth of knowledge, Duh. I was in a hurry, I'm logging wood and didn't want to be down for long. I thought I had it covered when the rebuild shop and the diesel shop both said it was a dealer item, guess I was just stuck in my own little world:))
