Yesterday I went to a local dealer to buy a tooth bar for my TC33. The dealer is large and sells both NH and Deere. In the show room their are 90% Deere lawn tractors, 3 NH and about 25 Deere, plus all kinds of Deere tools (string trimmer, chain saw ect). In the parts Dept again 99% Deere, shelves and shelves of Deere brika brak from wind chimes to candles you name it they had it with Deere on it. Next I went outside to look at the new CUTS here is where it got wierd. They had over 30 NH CUTS from 18-55hp, I climbed on all of them, I had good time. Next I thought I would do the same with the Deeres. They had 3 ( 2 new 1 used) Where were all the Deeres? From the time you walk in this place Its wall to wall Deere but, where were all the tractors? As I looked farther, rows and rows of NH Implements (hoes, mowers, rakes ect)not one new Deere, a couple used. I thought this was really odd a dealer so visably Deere had no deere CUTS or implements. I decided to pretend I was Interested in buying a new CUT and see what the salesman would say. I was shocked remmember other than the tractors in the yard you would not even know this place sold NH.I ask about a TC33 and a 4310. Which would I want and why. The salesman said they are both very good, I pushed for reccomendations. He said the Deere is good but, the NH is cheaper and has more standard equip. The NH has a newer design and is state of the art and Deere has now redesigned their tractors after the NH with the sloping hood and curved loader arms. I pushed farther what about service he said he had been working there for over 10 years and he thinks more deeres are in for service than NH. " Deere has had some problems in the past few years". Next question if you were buying which would you buy He said NEW HOLLAND. I then ask why more NH CUTS IN the yard. He said we stock what we sell and what the people what. I am not making any judgements or inferances on this matter. This post is not to start an arguement with Deere loyalist only to report what happened and to hear any opinions as to why this is what happened. Do they make more money selling NH tractors? Why so lopsided in the smaller tractor and brika brak arena? Again this post is only to provoke frienly debate. Thanks drv.

It could be something as simple as competition. Maybe there's a lot of JD and no other or very few NH dealers in his area.

I will say if I had a duel dealership, I'd be pushing both. Seems to me like he's missing out on a bunch of sales. Regardless of which is the better brand, they both have a big piece of the pie.

As far as the "brika brak" goes, a sale is a sale. There's a lot of money to be made in putting your name on a shirt, cup, hat or anything else. Just ask Coke & Pepsi, Chevy & Ford, Harley & Honda, or any of the other thousands of companies that do it.

I guess to know the entire story you'd have to look at what the competition looks like. How many competing NH and JD dealers are in the area? It's sort of funny but it seems that some areas are predominantly one color over the other. If that dealer is in a predominantly blue area he would likely stock and sell more blue. He could then use the JD stuff to fill out his product line since NH doesn't sell small lawn equipment. There are also other things he may be reluctant to tell you, like profit margins or dealer incentives that might make them push one color over another.

BTW, our local NH dealer was really pushing Branson the last time I was there (a year or so ago). Not sure what that logic is, but we are in a predominantly green area with a great chain of JD dealers here so maybe they need to compete more on price.

I had narrowed my choice down to a TC33 or JD 4310 and didn't think one had more standard features than the other, just different ones. The TC33 was cheaper but I went with the 4310 because some options I wanted simply weren't available on the TC33 (factory top-and-tilt kit, spark arrestor, etc.). ....

In my area, the dealer experience has been that with respect to CUT's, commercial mowing equipment, and Gators; the dealers could not keep them in stock as they sold as fast as they hit the lot or were already spoken for before they were taken off the trailer. I realize a lot of that was due to the fact that Ft. Campbell and the 101st Airborne are just down the road buying this stuff up but there was still plenty of NH and Kubota stock at the dealers. All three colors are good machines but in my experience, NH and Kubota are not even in the same galaxy when it comes to customer and logistical support. Deere is still (to my knowledge) the ONLY manufacturer that would warrantee their engines for use with JP-8 aviation fuel. None of the other manufacturers would. Deere's profits are up 62% for the 3rd quarter of this year and that speaks volumes about their products, quality and support. The only serious competion Deere has is Caterpillar on the big stuff and Kubota on the smaller stuff. Bottom line is; try them all out and go with the model and dealer you like best. ....

Around here there are more Kabota dealers than Deere and NH combined, NH and Deere are about equal in the # of dealers in the area. Two other Deere dealers in the area are jammed packed with tractors so it is not due to a shortage of tractors. In this area you almost never see a Deere being used commercially, definately more Kabotas than anything else NH would be second. Kwschumm NH does have a whole line of small lawn tractors and small mowers Zturn ect.. (homeowner as well as commercial modals. Whatever the situation I would think the salesman would point out the strengths and weaknesses in both brands give his best price and try to make a sale. ....

drcjv, thanks. I was actually thinking of small lawn equipment like string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, etc. but I didn't know NH had lawnmowers and stuff like that. The local NH dealer doesn't carry anything smaller than a small CUT. ....

Maybe it's just my twisted sense of humour, but when I read the thread tile, "Deere dealer pushing New Holland" I had this mental image of a guy in a Greene shirt pushing a dead Blue machine down the street and thought "Randy's gonna LOVE this one.....".

Now that I think of it, it IS just my twisted humour, LOL.

Best of luck. ....
