I have a yard with a few dozen hickory trees. As you might guess, this amounts to a lot of nuts. To mow I use a Deere 445 2/ 60" deck, and I would like to find something that would vacuum up the nuts. Most things I have checked out can't handle them. Any idea as to whether the Trac-Vac or Agri-Fab (or anything else?) might be up to this task?

Sorry, saw the subject line and I had to check to see if it was what I thought. Huh, I was wrong. It's a good question. My last house had a black walnut tree. Man those nuts would go shooting out of the mower. It'd scare you with the racket it made. I can see why you want a way to pick them up. I'm assuming those rotary leaf sweep things aren't any good at picking up the nuts? ....

I would imagine that a tricycler kit is probably your best option. At least you could chop up most of the nut debry. I mow yards with hickory trees and those damn nut shells are a pain in the butt! I have to wear safety glasses to mow because the shells can be like bullets. You might be able to install a bagging kit on your mower and install the Deere high lift blades and this might suck up enough of the nuts and shells to get the bulk of it. ....

Spoke w/ one of the lawn sweeper manufacturers, and they seemed to think the nuts would tear up the sweeper. ....

The squirrel are inhaling the acorns from the white oak in my drive way. Makes is a bunch easier to clean up with the leaf blower.
On that note; you may be able to clean up the hickory nuts with a leaf blower and pile them up and get rid of them. Only thing is that you will need a backpack commercial type blower that has enough power to do this. ....

We have our share of squirrels and then some. They do consume some portion of the hickory nut crop. The problem with squirrels, though, is that they turn any given nut shell into dozens of little shell fragments (debris) in the process of trying to get to the meat. Of course, they leave the debris for me to clean up.
As many squirrels as there are, they don't consume enough of the nuts for me to be able to use something like a chipper shedder vac (CSV) just to get up the debris. A CSV, I'm guessing, could probably handle the debris. But the whole nuts and shells the squirrels don't get to -- which is quite a few -- would tear up the CSV, or so I'm told by one of the larger manufacturers.

After reading your message, I tried to get on the Agri-Fab site, but it doesn't seem to be working at the moment. I have one of their lawn sweepers (a Sears model). A friend suggested maybe I could find a used, beat-up sweeper for the nuts then use my good one for leaves and grass.
As I recall, last I looked at their vacuum systems, the web site indicated 54" as being the maximum deck size for their largest unit. Unfortunately, so far as that goes, my deck is 60". (I certainly can't complain about that though -- it's sweet when the grass is growing.)

Since I am not a premium member, Chief, I cannot read your entire message. No more than I use the site, it's hard to justify the premium price. I appreciate your suggestion, though, about the tricycler kit, which I assume is a mulching kit. That's worth looking into.
By the way, does anyone have experience with the Bag-A-Nut harvesters? They seem awfully pricey but look like they'd do the trick.
