Kubota D905-B in Hustler mower not runnig right

the mower is a hustler 320 with kubota D905-B engine it runs fine at times usaully after it warms up but not every time it acts like its not running on all cylinders and I smell diesel, the injector must work because it runs fine at times and i smell fuel when it runs bad. the glo-plug may be the prob can one work on and off? sometimes it will run good to cut 2ac and other times I cant cut 1/4ac it allways starts and runs fine for awhile its never consistant.

Glow plugs are only used at startup. Bad fuel? Also, check the check the fuel bowl for moisture (if it has one) and drain as required, and change the fuel filter.

KW has it pretty well covered. Fuel cap vent, or a loose fuel line nut, maybe??? Frank.

It sounds like one cylinder is only working part time.

You say when it happens you smell diesel fuel, if it was a clogged injector you would not get the fuel smell. It could be you have a sticky exhaust valve that holds open sometimes. No compression, no ignition, and raw fuel being pumped out the exhaust.

How many hours on the engine?

The easy diagnosis is to CAREFULLY, one cylinder at a time, cover the injector end of each fuel line while it's acting up and gently crack open the fitting a little, you should have some fuel leaking out. When you get to the bad cylinder it will make no difference in the performance, a good cylinder will drop off without the fuel pressure.

Best of luck.

Hotrodscoot,

Your explanation causes me to believe that you may have a blown head gasket.

Head gaskets tend to develop hair-line cracks in them. This doesn't affect the performance of the engine when cold. However, as the engine begins to heat up, that crack in the head gasket will also open wider, as it begins to move with the expanding metal.

Have a compression test done on the engine when cold, and again after it has warmed up. You'll likely find that the compression test on the warm engine will reveal a low compression reading on one cylinder. A compression test is done by removing the injectors, one at a time, and then placing high pressure air on the top of each piston, when each piston is at TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC) on the compression stroke.

High pressure air introduced into a cylinder can cause the engine to turn over, so precautions must be taken to prevent this, as it could cause serious injury. It's best to leave this job to a professional.

It sounds to me as though your head gasket is blown between one of your cylinder openings and an exhaust valve. A compression test should verify this, as you will likely hear air escaping through the exhaust.

Joel

Based on the above I'd say it's unlikely a head gasket problem. I agree that the problem will often worsen as the engine heats, but it will be a constant problem, i.e. worse when hot, better when cold.

A problem that is unpredictable, works good sometimes when it's hot, sometimes not, sometimes works good for a few hours, sometimes gets bad in a few minutes is more likely a problem like a sticky valve or a piece of junk between the pump & injector. Something that can come & go, not a break or crack that is constant.

Best of luck.

I kind of think it could be a valve when it acts bad. but its not consistent sometimes it will do it in less then a min and other times it could take a hour or not even do it. I do appreciate everybody imput I dont know desiels I know gas pretty well.I dont think it could be a head gaskit. There is also a ignition issue that the clucth wount work inless you wiggel the key and when it happens the alt light comes on. I think it is 2-diff prob I think switch is bad. on the other prob can a valve stick intermediately? it has about 2200hrs how many is the norm for a desiel? Thanks
