It is possible the injection pump needs rebuilt. The Roosamaster pumps have a plastic ring inside that crumbles with age and it clogs the return fitting on the pump. On the side of the pump you will see a small rectangular plate held on with two countersunk screws. remove those screws and the cover and see if you find black crumbs that looks like coffee grounds. If so place a bucket under the pump and start the engine while the cover is off. The engine should continue to run as long as the return fuel can bleed out. If this happens, you will need to replace the pump or rebuild your current one.

Personally, I like the gear drive models for tillage work. I am sure you will get arguments for hydro also, just my preference.

If the pedals are moving free;y and return to neutral when released, then the problem is the neutral switch. There is no adjustment to the switch. The switch is not easy to get to. It is under the tractor on the hydro linkage.

codenok, I agree, you should have your dealer doing repairs. But, If hooking jumper cables directly to starter made it start, you probably have a battery cable bad or ground connection bad on negative cable. For the coolant loss, have you seen any leaks? If not go around and tighten all hose connections. Sometimes the rubber in the hoses relaxes and the clamps need to be retightened. Don't forget the hose connections on the heater core. It is under the roof.If these hoses leak, it will drip out of the condensation hoses with a/c condensation and may go unnoticed. Be careful not to damage the seal on the roof, it will let dirt into a/c and make it inefficient.

Have you checked the hydraulic quick couplers to be sure they are still plugged in tight? Try disconnecting and reconnecting them. Do you hear the engine labor when you try raising the loader? Does the joystick feel normal? No disconnected linkage? There is very little to go wrong with the selective control valve itself. If the lever is moving the spool valve, the oil should flow. As a test, you could disconnect the hoses to the tilt cylinders and plug in the lift cylinders to those couplers. Then see if the loader will lift.

Nathan, the valve you are referring to under the step is the "pressure control valve". I prefer to cvall it the priority valve, since it gives priority oil to the steering. If the pressure falls below around 1750 psi, it will shut off oil to three point hitch and hydraulic outlets.(scv's) It can definitely be a problem, but I am more concerned about the three point hitch that you say falls down fast with engine off. You could be losing so much oil in the hitch that there is nothing left for the outlets. Do you have any way to test your hydraulic pressure? The stroke control valve in the pump could also be worn and not allowing the pump to build enough pressure for rear outlets. There is an adjusting screw on the bottom of the pump to adjust pressure, but if there are large internal leaks such as you have in the three point hitch, you may not be able to adjust enough to overcome the leak. Have you tried to lower the hitch and see if it improves hydraulics? Sometimes it will depending where the leak is in the hitch.

Is the tractor gas or diesel? If diesel, is it still 24 volt system or is it converted to 12 volt negative ground. If gas, is it still 12 volt positive ground or has it been converted to negative ground? From factory, both models (gas and diesel)had fuel gauges that operated on 12 volt positive ground. Both had generator charging systems. When converting to alternator charging, It fouls up fuel gauge and sender. You would need to convert fuel gauge and sender to late model 4020(69-71) to operate properly. If you do have original systems, It can be a bad sender, gauge or both. Let me know what set up you have.

I think you will find your problem solved after replacing the module. It is not always clear what fails first, but you will have all new components, so you should be good to go.

I would suspect bad brakes. The brakes are "wet" brakes and if they fail and run metal to metal, it contaminates the hydraulic/transmission oil. Have you pulled out the sump screen to check it? Usually the brake lining peels off of the disk and clogs the screen first. Then you lose hydraulics until screen is cleaned. If you repair brakes at that point, it doesn't contaminate the oil too badly. The real problems start when someone cleans the screen and keeps running. Worst case scenario, I have seen some people remove the filter cartridge and run without a filter because theyy tire of changing filters. That allows the contaminated oil through the pump, steering, rockshaft and selective control valves. That creates many problems as you might imagine. Hopefully if yours has not been run without a filter, Fixing the brakes and flushing out the transmission will cure your problem.

If the rubber manifold is collapsing, then there has to be a restriction in the suction side of the system. Pull out the sump scren and check it. also be sure no lines are kinked shut.

It sounds like it is time for a clutch job. These two stage clutches lose the ability to release the pto clutch as the main clutch wears. If the main clutch is not slipping now, it probably will be soon. Be sure too get a quote on a clutch job before you buy. The prices on these are very expensive. A complete clutch assembly from JD is over $2000.00 for the part alone. usually a complete clutch is not needed. only worn parts need replacement. These are great tractors, just be sure you get it cheap enough to still be able to replace the clutch. Good Luck!

Sorry if I mis-stated that operation. You are right. You can crank engine if shifter and pto are in neutral. The seat switch only will cause voltage to fuel solenoid to be interrupted if you leave the seat while in gear or pto is running. So, the neutral switch and pto switch works two ways. They can prevent cranking and also they can shut off fuel solenoid.

The only other thing I have seen is if the pump is really worn, it has a hard time picking up the oil after it has been drained. Chances are if that is the problem, you might need a pump anyway, but you might try overfilling the reservoir by a couple of gallons to see if that helps. After it picks up the oil, you could probably drain it down to the proper level.

Do you have a compact utility 4010 or a 1960's 4010 row-crop tractor? It does sound as if you could have a clogged return line. If I know which 4010 you have I might be able to give more specific info.

Will the light go off when you disconnect the wire from the pressure switch? If not, then you have a short somewhere in the wire or the instrument panel. If it does go out, then you might actually have low oil pressure. You should get it checked before any engine damage occurs.

The 2010 rockshaft can be tricky to repair. Especially if it is a dual rockshaft. The most important part is to removed every plug, valve and piston in the entire assembly. Clean and inspect everything. Blown seals, stuck valves and misadjusted linkage are the usual problems.
