Hi there,
I'm new here so I'm not sure I'm doing this right but I'm trying to replace the seal on the left front hub (not sure that's what it's called). After taking it apart I see a big nut that I assume needs to come off. Do I need an impact wrench? I bought the tractor 10 years ago and the same seal went out while it was still under warranty. I thought I'd try to save some money and fix it myself. A repair manual would sure come in handy. I posted a picture of the nut but I don't know if you can get to it.
John

John;

Welcome to the board.
If I'm understanding you correctly, the seal between the hub that you bolt the front wheel to and the front axle housing is leaking fluid?
I've had mine apart to replace the seal. So far you have remeoved the 8 capscrews around the edge of the housing that comes off bringing the axle and some internal parts with it?
I'm wondering where the large nut you are talking about is.
When you pull the plate with the axle hub in it you will see a snap ring against a ball bearing on the inside end of the axle. Remove that snap ring then remove the ball bearing, the bevel gear, then a spacer ring. You should be able to pull the hub from the outside of the plate.
The outer ball bearing comes out from the inside if the plate and there is the seal you need to replace in the hub plate.
Sometimes when you see a hub seal leaking you suspect a bearing problem, so check both bearings. Mine were fine and the seal looked like new, so I don't know why it leaked but a new seal fixed it.
Ok for re assembly Deere has a sealant in a small tube that needs to be applied to the surface between the hub plate and the outer side of the new seal. The surface between the hub plate where the 8 cap serews were and the main housuing has no gasket, you use the same sealant. All the surfaces where you use the sealant must be super clean and dry or it doesn't stick
Frank. ....

Thanks a lot for the help, Frank. I'm afraid I'm a little dense though and didn't understand what you were saying. I just posted a few more pictures of it so maybe you can see what I'm dealing with. Thanks again!

John, You don't need an impact wrench, but it would make it easier. You just need to hold the gear or axle securely enough to get the nut loose. Try screwing two lug bolts into the axle and then put a long bar or a piece of pipe between the lugs to anchor the axle. Then put a socket and breaker bar on the nut to break it loose. The gear should then lift off of the axle and the axle should slide out of the bearings to get to the seal. I think Frank has a different front axle. There are two styles. ....

I had forgotten about the earlier axle they used.
There must be an earlier tech manual, mine only shows the snap ring style.
I couldn't get any of John's photos to come up for me.

Your pictures come through fine for me. Here is a link with parts breakdown.
Sorry, apparently the link does not work. If you sign up with your dealer, you can view the parts catalog. ....

I couldn't find anywhere on my dealer's website to sign up. Do you know of anywhere else I might find an illustrated parts list? Thanks, JD

Thanks to all of you who advised me on replacing the seal on my front axle.
I bought an impact wrench to take that big nut off with. I talked to the JD mechanic to find out how much torque it required and he said 360 lbs. My cheap impact wrench didn't go that high so I took the hub in and had him replace the seal. It cost me $25 and I think it was worth it.
