2640 Hydraulic problem

I have a 2640 with a 146 loader, 1983 I believe, that keeps plugging up hydraulic filters. When I bought the tractor the owner had replaced the main front pump with a used unit. It has always been shaky at start-up. Once the loader is cycled then it works ok. Lately when it starts acting up I replace the filter and then it works ok. When I change the filter I find some very, very small metal flakes in the filter. Is this a sign that the pump needs to be replaced promptly before I damage something else? I have changed the fluid and filter regularly.

I don't know where else in the system metal bits could originate than the pump. You might keep the filter take-offs to show the rebuilder, if you know who it is. ....

I would suspect bad brakes. The brakes are "wet" brakes and if they fail and run metal to metal, it contaminates the hydraulic/transmission oil. Have you pulled out the sump screen to check it? Usually the brake lining peels off of the disk and clogs the screen first. Then you lose hydraulics until screen is cleaned. If you repair brakes at that point, it doesn't contaminate the oil too badly. The real problems start when someone cleans the screen and keeps running. Worst case scenario, I have seen some people remove the filter cartridge and run without a filter because theyy tire of changing filters. That allows the contaminated oil through the pump, steering, rockshaft and selective control valves. That creates many problems as you might imagine. Hopefully if yours has not been run without a filter, Fixing the brakes and flushing out the transmission will cure your problem. ....

I'll check the brakes as I noticed that the LH side pedal has been lower than normal, I thought that I needed to bleed it. The screen has been clear all along. ....
