I finally made the deal on my stand alone generator.
108KW, powered by a Perkins diesel. Two 200 amp auto transfer switches, fuel tank, charger, block heater, all wiring and installation. All for a mere 17 grand :(

Billy, I would love to see your idea of a large generator! ;-) I'm also thinking you see it as a "few" chickens as well? I bet with that many in such close quarters, you cannot afford to go without electricity for any period of time; especially when it is hot outside. You gotta show us some pics of it. ....

If that's a small generator I suppose my tiny 13KW generator is microscopic! That sounds like quite a good deal. Is that new? ....

I remember when the idea first came up. Good to hear that it's there and working right as cold weather is closing in.
I don't know if the just under 2 watts per bird is the same as the original idea but it's that's a lot of watts for a lot of birds. If it were me, it's a good thing I don't have chicken because I used to use 500 watts per dog. At that rate for chickens I'd have to have my own hydro dam. ....

Chief; If I had a digital, I'd take some pics :(
Ken & Art; Yes, everything is brand new.
Tom; The integrator requires a 100KW for a farm my size. Later on, when money allows, I plan on running it to my house also. ....

UPDATE.
The generator is set and operational. It's powered by a 365 cu. in. inline 6 cylinder Perkins diesel. HP is 162.5 at 1,800 RPMs. There's a screen on the gen that tells the oil pressure, coolant temp, frequency, volts, amp draw and battery volt charge.

I'll bet it could be rewired into a really nifty welder, of course I'm not sure you could lift the rod necessary, let alone position the steel that thick.
Seriously though, did you get a heat exchanger / scavenger on it as well Billy? It is great when you lose power in the winter.
Best of luck. ....

They're called 'co-generators' I think (electricity plus heat) and this diesel may be big enough to make it worthwhile if it's going to be run frequently--or maybe sell power or heat to your neighbours and run the diesel a lot. Well, that idea probably run into trouble with some government thing or another.
I don't know what an integrator is but I'm curious. ....

Murf, it's just an emergency generator. The only thing it'll run is 48,000 sq ft of poultry houses (later I'll run it 'my' house). If the power was to go out, especially in the hot summertime with big chickens, they wouldn't last long without the fans.
Tom, We poultry growers grow for what they call an integrator. I'm not sure where or why the title came to be. Maybe it's because we were integrated into their system. ....

Sounds like a great set-up. I too am a chicken farmer. I have a total of 120 sq ft and 51 chickens :-) How many eggs do you produce? Are all your chickens of the same breed? ....

Thanks Billy! That sounds like what's called a marketing board here. Everybody except for very small producers receive a quota and have to sell to the board, which also does a bunch of regulation--maybe generators too. A woman I knew's husband worked for the Egg marketing board and described himself (university degree and all) as a professional egg counter. He probably got promoted by now. I hope so. ....
