Could the carburetor gasket be leaking causing extra air to be sucked into the intake? Usually those carburetors are pretty simple, it may not hurt to install a rebuild kit.

What model Gator do you have? Single or twin? I'm assuming it is not new. If you have the choke out that means you are getting too much air, which means, you probably have a restriction in the fuel supply. More fuel needs more air and you can let the choke out Probably a good carb cleaning with gum out and compressed air will get you back in business. ....

Gee gator that was clear as...mud. LOL

Seriously though, to save face (yours) just delete your your unwanted posts, then edit your last--providing it's what you REALLY want to say. LOL

To do all that just look to the left of the screen where your avatar is and there will be links for "edit" and "delete". ....

Assuming a vacuum fuel pump, remove it and (carefully) clear with compressed air. I've got a 15hp Yamaha twin that does the same thing. It lopes badly from idle to half throttle, not running smooth until at full throttle. For some reason the engine isn't pulling enough vacuum through the fuel pump at idle. And unfortunately it's got one of those EPA-mandated carburetors that doesn't allow adjustments to the air/fuel mixture.

But clearing the pump with compressed air is a temporary solution, the problem comes back with time (dirt I presume). Eventually the pump diaphragm gets damaged by the compressed air. So since I'm unable to diagnose why the reason for the low cylinder vacuum, I end up putting a new fuel pump on it about every 2 years.

I can not explain the why nor think of the model of Gator we have but it is about 6 year old 7 hp gas. I found it to be very touchy if allowed to sit for a period of time probably at least two months. It runs terrible and often as you say only with choke partly pulled. Have learned when it does like that add fresh fuel (carb cleaner may help) and run - run - run it. Guess what ever the restiction is fresh gas running over it cleans it.

Simple to solve, use the Gator every month and since doing that no problem I can remember. ....
