I just bought a 4310 with a 430 loader and a LX5 mower.

I am used to a 2 stage clutch which engaged/disengaged the rear pto. On the 4310 when I engage the pto (at idle) I get a "bang" when the mower engages. This seems pretty violent by design (the previous owner bought shear pins by the dozen). And way to make this better?

Also the controls to the 430 loader are way too sensitive. Push the lever foward just a bit, and the bucket comes crashing down. I have to baby the lever to get a normal drop rate. It will be near impossible to control the loader when the tractor is in motion. Any tricks or adjustment to this?

Any help will be truly appreciated!

Is your hydraulic fluid at the proper level? Do you know when the hydraulic fluid and filters were last changed? And do you know for a fact that the installed fluid meets JD specs with the proper friction characteristics for the pto clutch? If not I'd recommend draining all the hydraulic fluid, change the filters, and refill with the proper JD approved fluid. Bleed the air and see if things improve. ....

Is there a pto clutch? I was told it was a direct gear drive off of the engine crank shaft.

What is the correct hydraulic fluid for the 4310? I will change it before the next use. The tractor only has 200 hours on it. The only maintenance that I am aware of from the previous owner was engine oil changes. ....

It has an electric PTO wet clutch/brake pack operated by the switch. Generally you'd run JD Hy-Gard (and low-viscosity Hy-Gard if operating in temps below 0 degrees). All fluids and filters should have been changed at 50 hours and at 200 hours it's due again. ....

Tork, there is no mechanically engaged PTO clutch, it is electronically engaged. When I engage the PTO on my rotary cutter I also get a bang - but not a large bang. A bang you would expect on a hinged blade that has been kicked into gear. If you are having problems with sensitivity on the 430 loader then you might have problems with hydraulic fluid or lines as KW suggests. ....

Skip the Low-Vis entirely. Just use regular Hygard.

Maybe you can find the maintenance records records from the previous owner through the dealer you bought from. ....

I bought the tractor directly from the original owner. He seemed pretty meticulous about the tractor, but he was also very elderly. I'm not sure I would feel completely satisfied about any answers I got from him.

Because of the low hours, I'm not worried about any damage related to maintenance. I did notice that the oil plug had been turned, so I figured he took care of the engine oil.

I know that it would be a good idea to perform all of the regular maintenance because I don't know for sure that it was done. ....

That would make sense as it is due at 200 hours anyway.

Do skip the low-vis. I can go into the reasons or you could check the archives. ....

as for as the loader dropping fast, you should check to see if the restriction orfice is installed/installed correctly in the return circuit. replace the filters they could be clogged and in "bypass" mode having no restriction whats so ever adding to the drop rate ....

Ken, I think the 200 hour tranny service schedule just calls for new filters and to clean the suction screen.. After the 50 hour fluid change, the next change comes every 400 hours. At least that's what my 4610 calls for. ....

You're right, Billy. In this case the original poster isn't sure what fluid is in there, or if it's ever been changed, so new fluid seems like a good idea - especially since the friction characteristics of the pto clutch operation are questionable. ....

It maybe a "service manual" I will try to find it, I am not trying to be a jerk.I looked in my "parts catolog" to see a listing,no luck. how ever the catolog does list ALL of the part #'s,NICE for ordering.
The loader does not have any valves, there for no testing or presure checks other than what is supplied by the tractors hydraulic pump and the joy stick assembly itself. which is included on my service cd rom for my 790. ....

I have the same tractor with the same issue; the electric clutch just will not engage slowly like a manually operated clutch.

I have found that by engaging the PTO ONLY when the engine is at an idle will just about completely eliminate the shear pin shearing. It will still engage with a bit of a "bang".

The electric clutch is nice, but John Deere would do well to redesign it to eliminate the harshness during engagement. ....
