I posted a few weeks ago I posted about trading a JD650 for a 4110. I got to thinking that the 4110 might not be what I want, so I started looking at the new 2520. I got a price of $15300 for tractor and FEL.
Now here is my question. I am also thinking of trading in my current lawn mower, a JD x475 with 54 inch cut. I currently mow about 4 acres, my yard and our Church yard. Is using a CUT for a lawn mower a good or bad idea?
What about tires? I like the industrial and they are less agressive than the terra type tires on our 650, and I'm afraid the turf will not work in tractor mode (bush hog and FEL work) Thanks again for any input. JC

Depending upon how much trimming and objects like trees, schrubs, clothes lines, swing sets, etc. you have to cut around; a CUT is just not very efficient. For that matter a LT/GT does not do so well either but far better than a CUT. The trade off would be more mowing with a push mower and string trimmer using a CUT. ZTR's are much better with respect to manueverability. In my opinion, a front mower ZTR is what works best and gives the best of both worlds. You may be able to find a Deere F525 in good shape for around $1,500 in the used category. Deere also makes an F687 which is a ZTR front mower hybrid. These machines also have a very low profile and are great at mowing up under trees and bushes as well as being great to cut steep slopes with where a CUT or LT/GT cannot go.
In a nutshell, if you have a lot of open area with little to no trimming, a CUT will work great and really cut your time down.

Chief gave you the straight poop.
You will not match a commercial FMM for pure acre for acre cutting with anything short of a big bat-wing mower.
The only thing I would add is that the turf tires will do a lot more than you think, in fact we used them to snow plow commercially up here in Canada. I think they give better tractioon than any other tread pattern in every situtation except deep snow or mud.
Tire slippage is usually more related to improper ballasting or operator error.

I had a GT tractor that I mowed various properties from a 75' by 125' lot with a house on it to 2 acre lot with 1.5 acres of grass to a 5 acre lot with 2 - 3 acres of grass. The garden tractor did fine on them all, but took too long on the 2-3 acre lawn.
I now have a Kubota B7610 about the size as the Deere 4110 or slightly bigger. I have the turf tires and it mows superior to a graden tractor. I have not obstructions so I may be jaded. With the HST I can get it anywhere and it is fun to use.
Murf and Chief of course are correct that a dedicated mowing machine will get an even better cut and faster. But hey I only have room for one thing and I want to use it for all my needs loader, snowblowing, cutting. ....

A CUT can be quite nice to mow with, providing you do a little planning with your landscaping in advance. This means generous mulch beds surrounding bushes, trees etc. Otherwise, you are better off with a L&G tractor or a z-trak. One other thing, go with as large a deck as you can on the CUT -- it actually makes it more maneuverable -- in that the uncut circle is reduced, there is better overlap over the wheelbase, and you effectively push back the ROPS away from trees etc by going this route.

Time for my 2 pennies. I went from a JD325 with 54" deck to a 4310 with 72" deck. My choice? 4310 hands down. Both deliver a good cut on my 3 acres of lawn. I find the 4310 just as maneuverable as the 325 and it does have power steering. Now, granted the 4310 is much bigger than the litte 325, but my mowing time got cut down by more than 50%. Cut quality is the same or better.
I run the industrial R4 tires and have had no problems with them. Because I use the tractor for clearing snow in winter, I went with what I felt to be the best all-around tire for me. It works fine.
As the guys above stated, go with a the front mount mowers if you are looking for some serious cutting quality. My yard has lots of clay and is generally crappy to ok. So for me, the CUT works great. I'm happy. And from the road, the yard looks good. ....

Again, thanks for the opinions.
My yard is (1.5 acres) is very open. I have only a few places my current 54 mower will not go. I have inherited my Grandparents yard next door and it has lots of trees, but the roots are all on top of the ground and I can't mow close to them anyway. My Church yard is fairly open also except for the cemetary and I have to weed eat most of that anyway. I may end up with a push mower if I get this tractor.
As far as tires, our current JD 650 has a terra type tire on the rear and turf on the front. We have never had a flat on the rear and a couple flats a year on the fronts. Also we are on the 3rd set of front tires and the rears are still original. JC ....
