Well, I pulled the grill and side panels off the 4115 and the whole battery compartment and parts of the HST cooler are covered with rust.

Geez. It must be taking after it's owner. Too bad there isn't a Purple Pill for tractors.

So I hosed it down with something to kill the rust and took a big gulp ($130) and bought an Optima battery and installed it.

Check those battery compartments folks!

Sorry to hear about that Mark. I went through this very issue recently and replaced my battery with a sealed battery too. What a mess! I sprayed and soaked the entire battery compartment and radiator area with a heavy baking soda solution to neutralize the acid corrosion. So far the replacement battery is working out great. Here is a link to when I had my problem. ....

Sorry to hear that Mark. Anyone with a green tractor needs to keep an eye on that area. Curious, did your battery have the remote venting caps (with a vent hose) or just regular battery caps? The remote vent cap is working like a champ for me but it failed for Randy. ....

Ken, I had just a regular small size car type battery with no special venting. ....

I'm not green bashing, I'm just asking.

I've read of fair number of JDs (all 4000 series?) having this problem, including my BIL three or four years ago. What is the main cause of it? Are the charging rates too high, is there too much alternator voltage, or is it just a bad choice of battery for the application?
Dave ....

My guess is the wrong battery type coupled with a poor location. Mounting it close to the radiator/oil cooler heats the battery up. Mounting it near the very front of the machine amplifies any bumps/vibration causing it to slosh a lot. The cooling fan then pulls any vapor through the radiator and cooler. I think the 4000 series of a 4-5 years ago always used a remote vent cap which they did away with in the 10 series. The dealer gave me a remote vent cap which seemed to solve the problem on mine. The remote vent cap didn't work for Randy which I don't understand at all. ....

It was surprising they put a battery with normal vent in a tractor which should normally be jostled around. I had the same problem and just replaced with the yellow optima also.
I just neutralized the acid; wire brushed the rust and painted.

The optima battery is much better for starting and preheating in the cold any way.

I would have thought it should be replaced as a warranty part.

The battery on the 4210/4310/4410 machines is a BCI group 22NF which Optima doesn't make, so there's no easy direct drop-in replacement. Randy found a battery of another brand which works with modification to the battery mount. At one time I emailed JD and suggested they work with Optima to make a drop-in replacement battery to reduce warranty claims. They acted interested but apparently it was just an act. On mine the dealer pulled the radiator and oil cooler and cleaned and repainted everything all under warranty. That's when they gave me a remote vent cap. ....
