Picked up a new 2010 GR2010 (gas) today. Runs great. But it dies (engine stops) when you press the reverse pedal when the mower deck is live (running). Is this some new-fangled safety device? Or is it a defect?
If it is some new safety feature, how do I de-activate it/bypass it? Is it a switch I can bypass?
My purpose in asking is when using a snowblower in winter, one backs up a lot, I can't be shutting off the blower every time I need to back up.
Thanks

It is indeed, it's supposed to stop people from backing over kids, dogs, or whatever. It's called the "KRA (Kubota Reverse Awareness) System".
There is a safety switch that needs to be pushed each and every time you shift from forward to reverse with the PTO engaged.
Best of luck. ....

Thanks Murf. I think I'll be looking at the wiring on this "feature." I just back up too much around trees and such to put up with it.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the manual with it yet so I haven't been able to look it up what was going on. Convoluted tale... ....

I know someone else who tried to 'rework' that particular safety feature, it didn't end well.
Best of luck. ....

Thankfully a tractor issue Kenny.
It seems this system isn't as straight forward as a seat switch is, lots of issues trying to get around this one.
Best of luck. ....

Oh. Could be more complicated than I like. I was hoping to just unplug the switch and then jumper across it so it's activated 100% of the time. I'll have to ponder on this. Don't want to cause any damage. I'll also have to see how much of a problem it is to use the actual switch.
Didn't seem to logical that if you wanted people to watch when they back up that you would add a switch that requires you to look forward to press. Maybe logic is over-rated... ....

I don't think logic is over-rated, I think the problem is when the lawyers get between the engineers and the machine, things get over-complicated.
For years they've used back up alarms on all sorts of stuff, don't see how that wouldn't work here.
I'll ask the guys how they managed to solve the problem in the end and get back to you.
Best of luck. ....

Iowafun you don't need to touch any wiring there is a reverse override switch complete with flashing light. See brochure at:-
http://www.kubotatractor.org/kubota-gr2010-features.pdf
I have a JD x300 which also has this feature. It can be overridden by holding the mower engage switch in the upper position. ....

Thanks Murf & Bristan. I still am interested in bypassing/overriding the switch. I generally like to hit reverse right away and go into reverse. Not stop, find the switch, hit it, then go in reverse every time. Wouldn't be a problem if everything on the property was square with no trees, but I have goofy routes that cause me to reverse often.
Not to mention when clearing snow this winter!! I reverse a decent amount when clearing the driveway and where the snowplows park all the snow...at the front of my driveway.
I'll have to play with it this weekend to see how much of a PIA the switch will be. ....

Iowafun,
I agree it is a nuisance having to hold the switch on all the time while reversing with my JD. Having only one hand on the steering makes it quite awkward to manoeuvre while reversing into tight spots. My Kubota b2320 tractor doesn't have this system and I use reverse a lot as I have quite a hilly property and don't have sufficient turnaround space at the top of the hills. If I was doing as much reversing with the lawnmower, I would consider bypassing the switch. I would just put a normal single pole switch in parallel with the existing momentary action one and leave it on when I wanted to bypass the system. Should be fairly straightforward to do this.

As Murf pointed out this plus probabaly the color of the paint on your lawnmower could be constrewed by some ambulance chasing lawyer to be a court case.
I've got two identical Deere 345 lawn mowers one is a 99 the other a 2000, one has the silly dodad that stops the deck anytime the reverse pedal is pushed, the other doesn't. I didn't modify anything, that's the way it came from Mr. Deere. Betcha can't guess which mower is my favorite.
I doubt this is any kind of record but both mowers still have the original battery, neither show any sign of going dead "YET".

There are safety issues with the actual reverse switch. In several spots in my yard, I look over my left shoulder when backing up. So see properly because of low lying objects, I have to twist in the seat to the left thereby forcing me to steer with the right hand. Oops, need the right hand to operate the switch.
As I said, I'll have to work with the switch this weekend to get a better feel for it. Snow blowing will be a major issues as a key point for needing to back up is right where the ditch culvert is under the driveway. It's a good drop of up to 24 inches at the deepest point. So I'm mighty careful about looking behind me when backing up.
My driveway also curves too. Someone, I didn't see it, actually backed their car off of the drive edge at the culvert on Sunday. They had enough speed to keep going, but it took the corner edge off the concrete driveway, left a gouge in the yard where they hit, and left chunks of rust from the underside of their car in my driveway.
What a pain when safety devices can cause a safety issue. I'll stop complaining for now until I get to try it and see how much of an issue it will be. ....

Ok, I tested out my new knowledge of the safety switch and by golly it is something I can live with.
Apparently, you hit it once, it starts blinking, and then you get unlimited backups until you hit it again or shut the unit off. I can live with that... now that I know about it! ....

"I think the problem is when the lawyers get between the engineers and the machine, things get over-complicated."
Tell me about it. I swear, the owner manuals for my new Grasshopper have more input from their lawyers than from their engineers. Wonder if I could sue them for over-complication!

I agree on the lawyers. I've been reading the Kubota manual and it's one line of instruction per 10+ lines of lawyer warnings. What if we bypassed the safety switch and backed over all the lawyers? ....
