Hi All,

I’m looking to buy my first tractor and have narrowed it down to a Kubota L-3940HST and a Deere 4105. We will be mowing about 25 acres with a bush hog and 4 with a finish mower. I need a front loader for light material handling and a small amount of dirt work. Has anyone had any experiences with either tractor?

When a car needs service you drive or tow it to the shop. With a tractor, they load it on a carrier or send out the mechanic. Therefore, with these two top brands, if one dealer is located much closer to you, I'd go there. Otherwise just try both models. ....

For that kind of mowing I think I'd be looking at a golf course-type or roadway shoulder mower (whatever they're called)---like a big, dedicated batwing. ....

I'd listen to EW here. That's a lot of acres to mow with a small tractor. ....

It is not the 4 acres with the finishing mower that EW and Ken are talking about, rather the 25 with rough cut mower.
But I don't see much info on that 25 acres. Such as how often will you be mowing it, what is growing on it? Not sure what size rough cut mower either of those will handle but am right sure the max would be 6 feet. If you are cutting 25 acres very often with a 6 foot mower you will spend many hours on that. ....

KT,

Thanks for the reply. Most of our place is in trees and what we are mowing is rolling pasture. A 6 foot bush hog is what I will be using, I am retired so a few hours on the tractor won't be bad. I was more conerned about what tractor to buy, the Deere or the Kobuta. ....

Let me repeat: with a lot of seat-time coming up, give both brands a good test drive.

The best diesel engines (IMHO) are made by Yanmar and Kubota. That Deere model (like several others) uses a Yanmar engine.

Except for towing, tractors don't do anything; it's the attachments. So you might pay more attention to what kind of mower(s) and other attachments you'll get, and how easy the on/off and servicing will be. Price a set of replacement blades and belts. The type of tire makes a big difference so decide on that too. ....

To me the dealer is more important than the brand. Do you have friends and neighbors in the area that have Kubota and JD tractors? It would be worth asking them about their dealer experiences. A shady dealer, or one that won't answer questions or help you out after the sale, or one that specializes in big farm equipment or high volume may not be willing to help out the little guy with "only one" small tractor. We have a dealer in our area that specializes in selling to vineyards and he will ignore anyone else. ....

There hasn't been a whole lot of discussion here about flail mowers and the different types, but if your ground is flat and smooth you might consider an 8' one to cover more ground. They tend to be quieter running. I had a 6' that was nice for straight runs but tended to tear up the ground in turns. It does give a golf-course type finish though, but then so do most mowers.

Auer, have you heard of prairie- or mountain-oysters LOL?

....

Yep, quite a few. Here's a link if you're curious. We have at least a dozen wineries within a 15 mile radius of us. ....

With a 72" deck mowing at 5 MPH you should be covering about 3 acres an hour at 80% cutting width leaving 20% overlap.

This is good time for a tractor as they are meant to be run!

Most people when doing mowing work with the cruise on love the Kubota dual speed hydro as you can slow down a bit in rough or deeper grass and not have to reset the cruise control. ....
