I would like to find out what a good price would be for a used John Deere 870 4wd with loader, mower(rear), post whole digger, box blade & grader blade and tiller. Have a chance to purchase one, but think the asking price of 18,600 may be a little too high for a used 199?. Does anyone have a good estimate on a price range. Thanks :0)

Michelly,

The number of hours showing on the meter will be a huge factor in determining a price.

Tractorhouse.com shows several 870 tractors with loaders and 4WD, but some tractors have 8000 hours on them.

Joel,
Checked the hours and shows 474. However, hydralic cyclinders are all leaking, does not look as if maintance has been done on it like it should. There is front grill damage, all equipment that is with it is on the rusty side. The mower, tiler and loader (440) are all John Deere. The post whole digger, box blade and grader blade are a different manufacturer. It wil also need tires as it has been sitting (under cover)and the rear tires have gone flat and are now cracking. The taillights are 1984's, so not sure what year it is. So with this new information would you be able to place an estimated price for tractor

Michelly,

Did the guy start it up for you, and did you hear it run?

I'm guessing that it was put under a tarp because of a blown head gasket, or something similar.

If he knocked $10,000 off of the asking price, it would still be too much.

My advice is to look for a different tractor. There are thousands available on the used market, all of which can be found in much better condition.

Joel,
Thank you for the information and advice. I had a feeling the price was way too much. Belongs to our neighbor whose husband passed away a year ago. She is getting information from friends. I am going to hate to break the news to her about this. Again thank you for your honesty.

Michelly,

I'm very sorry to hear the bad news concerning your neighbor's husband. How sad.

In many such cases, a tractor likely sits for many years while the man was just too ill to operate or maintain it. It's very unfortunate for the widow, but this is a very common scenario.

I truly wish I didn't have to be the one to pass along the bad news, but the reality of the situation is that the tractor has been neglected to the point that it is now worth almost nothing on the used market. She'd be much better off selling it at auction.

Wishing your neighbor well.

Joel and Ken you both could be totally correct. However, as the husband has passed away, it could be the tarp was placed over it by someone who did all they knew to protect the tractor such as the wife. Depending on the relationship with your neighbor it may be a losing deal for you any way it goes. In being fair to both parties, get a someone such as the dealership to go over it. kt ....
