I have a driveway that loops around my house and is about 2,000' long. I am trying to decide whether to buy a truck mounted snow plow for $2,500 or buy a tractor and blade or blower. I have the truck and like the idea of the comfort inside the cab when plowing. The dealer tells me the plow connects is just a couple of minutes. I don't have much other use for a tractor other than to mow a couple acres of lawn and the remainder is all woods gound, most of which is steep. Any thought on the best use regardless of expense.

I assume your truck is 4WD and that you'll be keeping it for a while, which makes it hard to beat compared to a tractor. However here are some reasons you might want the tractor:-Your driveway has walls on one or both sides that are prone to large drifts, Here a loader is great!-You live in an area where you get lots of deep snow, then a tractor based blower is great!-Your driveway is gravel, a rear blade is good for maintaining it.-You have dirt to mive around with the loader a $2700 addon-You can use the tractor with a finish mower a $1700 option-You have $18000 ready and willing to buy a new tool ....

Are you aware that you can get a truck mounted sonowblower? They are hydraulically driven and let you take advantage of truck (comfort, speed, ease ,warmth) and snowblower (no banks of snow, not as hard on truck etc.) Also can still be a hero to freinds and neighbours They'll gladly pay you, and youll get lots of requests! ....

Remember when you plow you have to have a place to move ittoo. A snow blower will throw it 20-30 feet off road way. Most Plows recommend 4X4 3/4 Ton, can be done with 1/2Tbut how much are you going to be moving in that pile you created, what's on the road will move easy. ....

Spent 4.5 years figuring out what works best for meand it is by far the tractor with a loader and rear blade

Spent the first year with the blower action on a smaller tractorand I wasn't to impressed. Next 3 years a 4x4 with a plow. it was nice and warm unitl it got buried in a drift. It was also nice and warm until it came toclearing 3 foot accumulations near buildings etc.Last year I watched my Neighbor clear 2000' of driveway on a new John Deerein less time than it took me to do 700'. and after he got done yanking me out of the drift I used his tractor to clear the drifts near the buildings etc.Once was enough for me The 4x4 and plow are history and I have a new tractor with a loader and blade. I have usedit numerous times and wouldn't go back to the 4x4 if you gave it to mejust my two cents

I was wondering what tractor you wound up with. I 'm in the same situation, and have been dickering about how big a tractor to do about 1300 feet of dirve. Curious to know the weight of the machine, hydo stick, turf or r4

thanks ....

Yep, a truck and plow can only do so much but it can do it faster than a tractor and blower. When the snow gets deep, its time to park the truck and get out the tractor and blower or a big loader. ....

I wound up with a Kubota B2150,Hydro, turf tires, woods loader, and a 6 ft rear blade from TSC.

The turfs work ok if the snow isn't to heavy or icy. I would strongly reccomend the chains with the turfs.

The neighbor I mentioned has a 955 JD,hydro , turfs,loader 6 ft blade and chains.

Both of the units seem to work equally as well with the exception of the chains which were recently added to the JD.

get a blade slightly wider (6") than the rear track width of the tractor and it will work much better.

I HAVE FOR SALE A 1997 FORD NEW HOLLAND MODEL 1920 FOR SALE.HEATED CAB W/EXTRAS (WARM AND COZY), FRONT MOUNT SIX FOOT TWO STAGE SNOWBLOWER, REAR BLADE, AND A HYDRAULIC LOG SPLITTER. I BOUGHT THIS AT THE BEGINNING OF WINTER 1997. I LIVED AT THE END OF A FOUR MILE FIRE TRAIL AND USED THE TRACTOR TO KEEP THE LANE OPEN. ONE SNOWFALL WE HAD WAS TWO FEET. THE TRACTOR CUT THROUGH THE SNOW SENDING IT 35 FEET EFFORTLESSLY.I USED THIS MACHINE FOR MORE THINGS THAN I EVER THOUGHT I WOULD. I RECENTLY MOVED AND NO LONGER NEED THE TRACTOR. HATE TO SELL IT BECAUSE I LOVE IT BUT.....LESS THAN 400 HRS AND MOST OF THEM WERE AT IDLE RUNNING THE SPLITTER. I PAID AROUND 30K FOR THE PACKAGE AND WOULD LIKE TO GET 25 BUT WILL TAKE BEST OFFER ....

MY drive is 2000' long. I use a skid steer with a 6' blade it works great and can get anywhere, it has a three sided enclosed cab but not as warm as the cab of a truck. I just bought a used JD 750 with a front mount snow blower, so I will give that a try. Those of you that have a blower, do you think I should also keep the back blade on? ....

Just wondering what tires, ag or industrial would be most practical when snow removal during the winter is important on a steep hill, and woods work is important other times?

Thanks

Hey Mike--

You don't say what size tractor you have or if 2wd or 4wd. Also, you don't say if it's wet snow, versus light fluffy stuff, ice underneath, what implement you are using etc..

The long and the short of it is I'd go with good quality tire chains regardless of what you have to work with tractor wise.

To be honest, a old beater truck with a plow is the way to go. It's quicker, safer, and you have heat! ....

Tom
If cost is not a problem, a front snowblower on a
tractor is the best as far as moving the snow to a
place you want it. I have a 1/4 mile long east-west
driveway, and for years I have used my truck plow. The
big problem is I get a bank on each side and it allows
for severe drift-in, here in N. Wisc. We get winds out of the North or N. West all the time. Since I switched to the
front snowblower on my Kubota 3430, I blow it to the south
each time and get almost no drift. It is also very handy
in small areas and allows me to shovel almost nothing
around my house and buildings. ....

I have that plow on my 4115. It works very well.

The only issue I have is it could be a few inches wider on these larger tractors. Under certain snow conditions when it is angled to the extreme, it will spill a little snow in the rear tire track.

Other than that it is fine. ....
