Anyone besides me have problems with fuel filters clogging on a B2710? I average 10-15 hours between filter changes. They clog up and collaps in. I've tried many different fuel sources, put in additives, drained the tank. All to no avail. My dealer thought my tank cap was not vented causing the problem. The physics is all wrong for that to collaps the filter, but I changed the cap anyway (since he gave me one)without any better results.

Anybody with ideas?

Have you cut the filter apart to see what it is the is plugging them? It sounds odd that they would collapse. You really need to see the cause so you can back track to find source of problem. Worst case you may have to drain your tank rinse out and start again, once you find the source so you do not repeat.

I am working thru a bad load of fuel on my big truck. Rust and water. I was not sure filter was problem until We drained and cut apart. I carry an extra filter for now and change one each day. Only 2-3 days will take care of the problem.

Truck stop ran out and the first load in must have really stirred the tank. OH WELL! ....

Any chance the tractor has a filter screen in the bottom of the tank or as part of the shut-off valve? The physics of a blockage there would be different than for a blocked cap vent since it wouldn't be working against air space in the tank.

Still, you'd think that blockages in the tank or line in the tank would be permanent and changing the filter wouldn't allow the tractor to work for 10-15 more hours. If the tractor continues to show signs of fuel starvation when it does run then maybe that's a place to check. Otherwise Harvey's idea seems a better bet and is a good thing to do anyway.

It does seem unusual that a tractor wouldn't show signs of fuel starvation long before a filter collapsed and I wouldn't have guessed the outlet seal on mine would be positive enough to allow pump suction to collapse the filter. Who knows--puny filters maybe?

What are you using to fill your tank? I would look there. Is it a painted can? ....

First of all I do get fuel starvation and loose power, thats how I know I need to change the filter. I keep 6-8 on the tractor tool box. I think I'm the only customer that buys them 12 at a time. I've got about 350 hours on the tractor and I've emptied and cleaned the tank multiple times. No difference in the problem.

Until I mentioned to the neighbor about changing so many filters I thought it was normal. Then he told me he changes once a year or every 100 hours or so. he has a New Holland!

First I thought bad fuel so I started buying from different places. I use the same stuff in my Ford truck with no problems. I've tried different brands of additives with no help there either.

Guess I should buy stock in the filter company. ....

Cut a filter apart. You have gottasee what is on the element to know where to look for problem.

I am thinking if your truck is no problem then you need to take a serious look at your storage barrel and if that has an alge issue your tractor tank will again also. there are treatments for killing alge. It takes some doing to kill the stuff. Lots of cleaning and treating (Don't ask me how I know). DO NOT TRY AND OVERTREAT the medicine is as bad as the problem especially for little filters.

The elements will have a very black residue that will rub off on your fingers.

It could be something other than alge but it is hard to be certian. So it is just guesses for now.

Side bar: I have used 3 primary filters and 2 secondary, in the last day and a half, cleaning up the 160 gallons of nasty fuel. I ran her almost dry yesterday to finish the job. Changed filters 1 last time refilled gonna burn close to 130 gallons on detail I'm on today so we'll see how good we did. ....

I would suggest draining and flushing out the fuel tank next time you get the fuel level down near empty. There may be some contamination in the fuel tank. Should be a fuel tank drain valve on your tractor to do this. Try using a filter screen funnel to refuel with and check for contamination in your fuel cans/barrels. Your fuel filters should last to the next filter change interval. Do NOT use galvanized cans for diesel fuel. The zinc will flake off and get in the fuel system. ....

If you suspect that your fuel barrels has little beasties growing in it; TSC sells diesel fuel microbiocide. You will still need to filter out the fuel after you treat it. You may be able to tell what is in your fuel filters by cutting them open and looking or you may not. If you do suspect the fuel barrels and cannot make heads or tails of what is in the filter after you cut it open; (Mind you, most fuel filters you will not have to cut open but examime the element) try pouring a few gallons of fuel through a couple of white coffee filters stacked on top of each other. You should be able to see what if anything is in your fuel that way. Any way you cut it, this is a pain in the butt. ....

Diesel does not pour thru a coffee filter unless you have something way different than I've tried.

Depending on how much fuel you have stored and if you have a way to use it. It is had to recommend what to do with it.

I'd treat and use it, unless you have lots stored, and keep changing filters as needed.

If you have lots stored check with your distributor for help disposing of fuel. Filters would then cost more than the hassle. ....

If it turns out to be a fuel problem, the fuel may be fit for a furnace. I borrowed a transfer pump and barrels from my distributor to pump out a tank at our camp and put it in the tank at our house. Of course, I wouldn't want algae in a furnace tank any more than in tractor fuel. Something to consider is that algae is more often a problem from the dealer than a home-grown one.

I keep thinking that a filter really needs to be cut in half to verify what the problem is before blaming the fuel. I remember being amazed once when I accidentally stepped on an old air filter and saw how sand actually was in the thing, and it wasn't affecting performance either. Even so, a filter can carry quite a bunch of crud you can't see and still work reasonably well. If the fuel starvation symptoms start and disappear for awhile after the tractor is shut down for an hour or so, the problem might be restricted flow from the tank or some combination of restricted flow and clogged filter. ....

You must have some really good coffee filters Harvey. :-)

Here is another option you may want to look at. Same priciple as the coffee filter but Racor makes it for filtering marine diesel before it goes into fuel tanks. You can probably order these through a local marine/boat store.

If you look in my pictures, I have a picture of my fuel tank/pump/filter set up. When I bought the tank it had alge growing in it. I added microbiocide and then I pumped the fuel through the filter and directly back into the tank. Basicly recirculating it like fuel tanker truck do at the airport. The filter is a 10 micron filter and should take most of any contamination out; at least enough for the tractor fuel filter to deal with the rest. Depending on how much fuel you have on hand, it may be worth it to try this, but not for a few 15 gallon barrels.

The filter funnel would be worth it for future use and prevention. Here is a web site that sells them:

I have one of these Racor filters and find it quite effective at keeping water out of the fuel system. You can pour a bunch of water into the filter and not a drop comes out but fuel pours right through. One catch is that for it to be totally effective you shouldn't add a fuel additive containing a water dispersing agent to the fuel before pouring it through the filter. The water dispersing agents work at dispersing the water so effectively it will render the filter useless for trapping water. ....

Let me clarify what I think I am hearing.

Are you guys saying that once the fuel is contaminated with algae or whatever that you can kill the bugs and filter it and it is as good as new?

Is there no loss of power? What makes fuel go bad permanently then? I thought it was just this sort of thing. ....

I wouldn't go so far as to say the fuel is good as new, but only pretty clean and filtered out. As you saw first hand, the fuel you had on hand from your furnace tank when sour with age. The cetane booster helped make it burn acceptible. If it were me, I would mix the old fuel with fresh fuel AFTER it has been filtered out. Sure beat dumping it out and you can still get some use from it. ....
