Both are excellent choices, but you need to tell us what your usage is that you already know the size you need ?

John Deere vs Kubota or other sub Compact ?

I was looking at the subcompacts because my budget is limited and I want to spend as little as possible and I thought a new tractor would be better than buying a used larger tractor. Not sure if that's the best thing to do.

I have about 20 acres of property that I just bought and initially I will be putting fence posting in around a small area and I'll be mowing about three or four acres

Answering these basic questions will help narrow your search

How will you be using your tractor?
How much property do you have? 20 acres
How many acres will you be using your tractor on?
Do you expect the land size to remain the same or expand?
Do you plan on doing any custom work for friends or customers?
Who will be the primary operator of your tractor?
How much experience does the operator have with tractors?

List 10 tasks you will ROUTINELY perform with your tractor...

I now own 3 Kubotas, nearest to the size you are talking about is a B2710. It probably would handle what you are asking of it but would not suggest a BX, lift capacity is not there for height.

The best tractor to me I have ever own was a full size JD. Sold it when retired from farming and miss it greatly. It just felt solid compared to my Kubotas.

Do as Paul has suggested, write down the task you know you want it to do. Then the task you think you may come up with later. Then find out about the implement needed for that task and then find out what size tractor you need for it. Now you know the tractor size you need. Tractor size is not just horse power it is also physical size. A lot of older farm tractors have by today's standards small hp but have weight for traction and stability. They also have 3 pth capacity in height is is great with such as an auger, blade for moving dirt of snow.

This is a great thread you should read about farming 20 acres where Ken Thompson posted some very helpful info along with Hardwood.
