What Tractor to Buy for 40 acres

My son and I have a piece of land with about 40 acres of pasture. We will need a tractor to mow and do other chores---perhaps a little snow plowing and hauling and maybe pulling small trees out. We would like something very reliable and have heard that diesels are just that. Any recommendation of what make, model, and year to go after? We have a budget of about $10,000, with a stretch of a little more, if necessary for the tractor and the mower

What Tractor to Buy for 40 acres

My brother in law has 55 acres and a JD 990 to take care of it. He uses it mostly for rough mowing. He seems to like the tractor but it's not fancy. This might be in your price range if you don't need an FEL. I'm not sure what Kubota or New Holland might be similar.

To tend 40 acres, $10K is going to be tight. I would look for a quality used machine. That way you can get the size and features you want, without paying the new price. Anything new for under $10K would be a waste of money, not going to be a big enough machine. Depending on how much of that area you will be bush hogging, you would need to look at a 40hp machine for starters. A neighbor of mine uses a Kubota M5700 to bushhog 16 acres, among other tasks.

Rick, having three threads of conversation to discuss this topic is a little confusing. I think most folks here read all the forums so it's usually only necessary to make one post to get input from owners of all brands. By the way, Welcome to the board!

What Tractor to Buy for 40 acres

I had a Kubota 2650 to manage 68 acres. It was too small. I'm looking at the L3400 which is 34 hp and should be about right. The problem is that they want around $15,000 with a loader on it. Sounds high but these things will last forever and a loader sure comes in handy. I agree that the JD 790 is too small. The JD 990 is the right one but they want around $12,500 just for the tractor. A nice used one would be fine. If you buy from a dealer they mark them up high. You might try ebay if there are no good ones in your area. I have had good luck at ebay.

John

What Tractor to Buy for 40 acres

if going used i'd look for a 245 massey ferguson, they are one of the best tractors ever built. if new for 40 acres i would not buy a cut. look at (these guys won't believe i said this) John Deere 5102 they sell for about 12,000 and are well built machines, i just about bought one before i bought my Kubota L3830HST, they were just too big for my usage. i would look in the 45-65 hp range in whatever i bought.stay away from a 235 massey they have bad steering problems, all others including the 135 are great, i heve owned two of them. there are three MUSTS 1.diesel 2.power steering 3.live pto.
good luck Chris

Your best bet might be to look local. there are plenty of Kubota's that would handle the chore. Look for an L or M-series on the large size but even a two wheel drive large enough could handle a loader fine. You should be able to find an L-2250 vintage about that size or larger if looks aren't important to you for the price you want to pay. The low interest makes a L-3400 quite attractive for your job.
