I have Kubota L2850 and they is too much free play in the steering wheel. Does anyone know how to adjust the free play?

Duke8444,

Free play in the steering wheel is probably due to a worn out steering linkage joint.

Raise your front tires off the ground using your loader, and then move your front tires left and right, by hand. There should be no free play in the linkage. If there is, you should be able to pinpoint the problem while doing this.

The other possibility is that your steering box has come loose from the frame. This is a common problem on my Kubota B series tractor. However, when this happens, my steering column moves freely in all directions.

If you grab hold of your steering wheel and push it forward and pull it back, it should not move. If it does, you'll need to tighten the bolts that secure your steering valve to the tractor frame.

Joel

Your Kubota has a hydrostatic steering system and the free play may not be mechanical at all.

The steering wheel turns a hydraulic valve, the valve directs fluid to the power steering box which causes the wheel to move either left or right.

It is not intended to be precise like the rack & pinion steering boxes in vehicles.

It is after all a tractor......

Best of luck.

If it's hydrostatic like Murf says, there is no adjustment. What you have a reactive-type system where, summarily, input torque on the steering wheel twists a torsional rod inside a rotary valve. When you turn it, the wheel turns the rod which rotates a valve of sorts which sends pressure to the steering cylinder. When you decide to stop twisting the steering wheel the valve stops soon after and stops flow to the cylinder.

Ford used a similar system albeit a linear actuator/valve on their HD pickups in the 70's. It gives you a slightly delayed response or feel.

Modern residential upright vacuum cleaners use a variation of this. You probably have seen these power or self-propelled vacuums that when you push on the handle it moves. Stop pushing the handle and it stops. Pull back, and it follows. So instead of you pushing the the vacuum you're really activating a directional switch.

Draft control on a tractor is the pretty much the same theory if I'm not mistaken. And if I am I'M SURE I WILL HEAR ABOUT IT!!! Smile

You're not mistaken Jeff, at least not about the draft control.

The upper link has a valve connected to it. Generally speaking, when you push on it the draft control takes this as a sign the 3pth implement is doing too much work and raises the 3pth a little till the load reduces. This is because with a ground engaging implement (such as a plow) when the load gets too great, the implement swivels bottom back / top forwards around the two lower pins.

As for the vacuum, mine works on a different simpler system, when 'she' picks it, it goes back & forth until 'she' sets it back down. No complicated mechanism. Wink yeah right

Best of luck.
