Does anybody know how to disable that annoying little switch that you have to pull up to back up without killing your tractor motor? On my LT190 it is on the PTO switch you pull it out to start the mower deck and have to pull it up and hold it to back up.

In the name of safety, why would you want to do that? It may be an annoyance to you but it was probably put there after someone got hurt or killed as a result of it not being there.

Horse_guy, I also have the LT190 and have been living with the RIOS switch. I haven't tried to disable the switch but imagine it can be done without too much effort. I have seen posts about this elsewhere on the web. I have considered the option of disabling since my kids are gone and there is not as much activity around the lawn.

Many of the new tractors have different means of activating the no mow in reverse switch. When people talk of their frustration of these switches I've listened to the manufacturers of their problem, ever seen anyone sue Oldsmolile because that's the name of the car they got run over with? I doubt it, they don't know the owner so sue them, normally the operator of a lawn mower is a close relative or friend. When a mower comes into a shop for repair they are supposed to make sure all safety switches are working before returning to the owner.

Art,

Sadly you are correct. If we don't get a handle on law suits all tractors will the Nerf kind that small children have and it will be our fault.

Do you remember the Democrat VP candidate and how he made his millions? Now what does medicines cost so much?

The next time you think this sure is stupid, ask yourself, what the judgment awarded was that caused this. Remember the lady who sued McDonalds in Alabama when she got burnt by their coffee when she placed the cup between her legs at the drive thru? Yet the temp of that coffee was lower than in a Mr. Coffee. It is not just there, a tractor dealer drives up to see two men breaking into his business through the roof, when he draws a gun and one jumps or falls off he sues and wins. The business goes bankrupt paying the thief. That was here 20 years ago.

We may think our companies are going over seas due to lower wages and no doubt that helps but our courts are awarding more money than the wages. No laughing here my friends.

Kenneth is right, in the aviation world it is a huge matter, for nearly 2 decades there weren't any small general aviation planes built in North America, it took a special US law to limit litigation against them to bring them back.

Today the lion's share of small planes are made in Czechoslovakia, not just because they inheirited a huge aerospace industry from the USSR, but because they passed a law forbidding litigation against the manufacturers or even enforcement of foreign litigation unless the accident occurred in that country, and the injured party is a citizen of that country.

Recently a tragic accident happened just down the road from here that outlines the needs for such safety measures. A 4 year old boy walked up behind his father who was cutting the grass with a riding mower, the father not knowing his son was there, reversed the machine to turn around severing a large part the boys right foot.

If we knew when it was going to happen, they wouldn't call it an accident!!!

Best of luck.

Like KT says, and I meant to say is, what drives these seemingly annoying devices is well, the insurance industry. And it's also the courts who go by what is called "state of the art" when it comes to the law. That means if one mfg. does something to make their item safer and you, as another mfg. don't and someone gets hurt and you get sued---shame on you, and you get a judgement against you. Also, insurance co's will tell the mfg. if you don't (put that switch there) your product liability rates will go up (because we have been sued before over this).

Seeing that this thread is already hijacked in the aviation direction. Here's some litigation waiting to happen.

Short: I'm not a lawyer but I don't see a problem with their disclaimer which is pretty specific:

"Disclaimer
Harley-Davidson ® engines were not developed and have not been tested or approved for use in aircraft. Harley-Davidson Motor company disclaims any and all responsibility
for damage or injury arising from use of its engines in these or any aircraft. By using this engine in an aircraft you agree to hold Harley-Davidson® and or Ray Air harmless in the event of accident or death."

Yes, I saw the disclaimer too. Then again Harley engines are not really known for their reliability. As they say, 90% of Harley Davidsons sold are still on the road...

The rest made it back home. Smile
