My 03 JM-180 is acting funny and I think
it may be fuel related. A few weeks ago and today
after working for a few hours it started to idle
down and seemed to run out of fuel. It will restart
but it is hard to keep running or it starts revving
up when pressing pedal. Was not sure I would make
it to the garage. After a day it seems to run fine
again.
I suspect fuel filter. (still need to change orriginal)
What do you think?
George

I think you should change the fuel filter George. And since the system will have to be bled for restarting anyway, you should take the opportunity to clean the sediment bowl and the banjo screen(s) while you're at it. If the fuel tank is low enough to completely drain, there's also a screen inside - right above the sediment bowl inlet pipe. Wouldn't hurt to change the injection pump oil either.

The symptoms definately point to the fuel being starved. Like Greg said start with the tank strainer and work forward. ....

Turns out that the fuel was being starved
because I was running out of fuel. My
gauge was showing fuel but the tank took
almost 5 gallons of disel.
I al notice that the rpm gauge sometimes
reads way off. I am assumming it may be
the instruments ground connection.

Will have to change filter later as the wife
wants to brush hog several of the fields befor
the grass gets to 30 inches.

I have a different brand, but my fuel gauge is way off too. You'll learn in time how usage you get for a given amount of fuel.

In my pickup, when I neglect to change the fuel filter, the truck starts acting sluggish and underpowered. It requires more throttle, etc. ....
