I'm looking to buy a 2003 2500 crew cab with a 6.0 gas, auto, 4x4, and 4.10 rear. Does anyone know the approx. gas mileage city/hiway I'll get with this truck? The salespeople I have talked to seem to not want to commit to any numbers

Pep: I worked for a while as a Chevy sales person and I can tell you that my customers were telling me anywhere from 10mpg to 20mpg. Yes, quite a range.

Depending on load and driving style I can tell you, with confidence, that you "should" see in the neighborhood of 12-15mpg empty on the highway, at the speedlimit. Loading and speeding will decreace this number quite quickly! In town 10-12mpg is all you will see realistically.

This is why I drive a diesel (VW or Cummins). ....

I have the small v-8 in a half ton,4.8 it will get 17 mpg on it's best day at 50 mph or less. I avg. 14-15. I have had
a 2500 with 4.10's and you can't expect more than 12 mpg
avg. under 50mph. you are pushing it after that. I had
a friend who got 9 mpg with his 2002,sold it and bought a ford diesel. My plumbers 2003 GMC 2500 diesel is always in the shop. $4000.00 extra for
the diesel and their cost of operating will buy a lot of gas.
There are forums out there that will give you the skinny on
this subject. Salesmen will say and do anything it takes
to get you to sign,that is how they pay their bills.

I've have a 2003 2500HD 6.0L 4.10 gears, crew cab since April 2003. The best milage I've gotten is on a 10 hour trip. Freeway driving was 13.5 to 13.9.mpg I had a light load at the time and 70-75 mph. At home in my costruction use its in the 12 mpg range consistently.

Off the point.... but just for contrast: Toyota is making a Tundra crew cab with a short bed, if that could suit your needs.

My Tundra gets 13 MPG, but only when I am towing a 5000# load through a 7000 foot pass.

If it is just folks in the truck, it pushes 20 MPG on the highway (cruise control at 65-70mph)and 16-17 around town.

I have a 2001 6.0 gas, auto, 4x4, 4.10 rear with 18,070 miles as of last week. I recorded every drop of gas on a spreadsheet. Best highway MPG = 13.75 (average of two fuel stops for 52 gallons) and overall average since I've owned it is 12.81. Most of my trips are under 20 miles and about 50% little or no payload.

Hey guys, a big thanks to all of ya for the timely replies.
I was hoping the mileage would be more in the 15 to 17 range. I have a 1996 chevy ext cab 1500 with a 5.7 and it consistently gets 18 on the highway when I'm not towing but, it does not have power to tow my 4500 TYM with loader and backhoe and two axle trailer very well. I live in a hilly area. I guess if I want more pulling power AND higher fuel mileage I have to go diesel. I know the up front cost are higher on the diesel but what I'd like to know are the maintenance cost higher on diesel than on gas? I keep my vehicles for about 150 to 200,000 miles before replacing. ....

I have a 'o3 GMC CC 2500HD 6.0l 2wheel. I have about 30k mls. The highest I have gotten on a full tank is 16.2mpg. That was driving at 65mph with the bead full of a few hundred lbs of camping gear. The low is 10.5mpg on the hwy with a 16ft trailer full of deer stands, cabins, generator, 4 wheeler, feeders, ect and the bed full of feed, fuel, and beer. My hour meter divided into the number of miles puts my average mph at a somewhat high 37. In those miles I average a little over 13mpg.

By the way, all you new GM owners know you have an hour meter. I forget the exact way to get to it but first turn the key off and remove, either press and hole the trip odometer reset or press the odometer reset until it is displayed. ....

I have a 2003 GMC Hummer H2 with a 6.0 Liter gas engine. I have averaged 13.8 MPG since it was new. It now has 16K miles on it. The high average on the highway is around 15+ and in heavy duty offroad, it will do 8MPG.

I have never tested the milage when towing my tractor, but it is not good. I expect that towing milage about matches the offroad milage at 8MPG.

I also have a 1992 GMC K2500 Pickup with a 5.7L gas engine. It produces about 2/3 the HP of the 6.0 and has never gotten over about 15 MPG on the road. It averages about 12 MPG for all kinds of driving. ....

My 03 Durmax just got 19 mpg pulling my 16 foot tandam with 2000lbs of concrete cylinders to my property this weekend. The same trip last year,Same load pulled with my 5.7litre yeilded 11 mpg and I had to run it to death to pull the hills. 19 mpg was done by keeping it under 70 mph, any speed over that and it does tend to go down a bit. ....

I have a Dodge 3500 with the Cummins and the 4.50 rear end. I am in the 18-19 range all the time. At highway speed the engine turns a little high with the low rear end. I actually do better around town.
I have talked with a number of people with the same rig plus 4x4 and the higher rear end they were in the 22-24 range highway.
You used more oil at changes but with the large capacity the cycle is a little longer. The oil filter is 14$ and the gas filter is 50$. The drive train has a 100K waranty. Cummins engineers state there is nothing for the engines to do 500K . I have talked with a number with these type of miles and no repairs.

I doubt if anyone questions the fact that diesel engines will get better milage than gasoline engines. I can say that with confidence on pretty much every brand. They also do better with towing. But, the question that started the thread was how the 6.0 gas engine does. There have been over a dozen threads devoted to various brand diesel trucks. ....

The 6.0 has proven itself to be a decent motor. Nothing to go overboard on, but good. The 5.3 and 4.8 V-8's get MUCH better milage, but you are limited to th e 1/2 ton chassis (to me not enough). I think if Chevy would put the 5.3 in the HD chassis they would sell thousands of them to folks who do the occasional HD work but still need milage on a non-diesel up front buget.

For my money the Diesel option ($4000 in 94 when I bought mine) was worth it. 150k and no mechanical work done other than a bad rear main which ruined the clutch disc at 140k. BTW I average +/-17mpg running 75mph empty. ....

I have a 2003 GMC 2500HD extended cab 4X4 shortbed with 4.56 gearing. I average about 14 mpg general driving and about 12-13 towing my dump trailer or my travel trailer. Overall, it's been trouble free and I've been happy. I traded a 2001 GMC 1500 extended cab 4X4 with the 5.3 for it. That truck averaged 17-18 miles per gallon, but only about 11 towing the same equipment. There are trade-offs with everything! ....

I have an '03 2500HD Crew, but it's a 2x4. On piece of advice. I got one of those bug deflectors and my city milage rose from about 10 to about 12. Don't know if anyone else has seen similar results, but there's my 2¢. ....

I know this is an old post, but just found the discussion. I have an 04' silverado 6.0 2500hd extended cab w/260?k miles on it. I pull trlr. w/things from building supply stores or boat/trlr.. I have found that keeping it around 65-70 i get around 17.5-18 mpg. and it needs new plugs. I think keeping my foot out of it so much in the hills we have here and don't use cruise much, better fuel milage. I do need to have the stepper mtr. for oil pressure gauge replaced, i just watch temp. and check oil every time i drive it. ....
