I have a TC33D. It started blowing the 7.5 AMP fuse at the top of the fuse box...I've probably replaced about 6 fuses. The NH service provider said there are no problems related and told me to check the wires. Couldn't find a problem. Well, the fuse blew again, I replaced it, but now not only will it NOT start, but no lights come on, nothing. Acts like the battery is out of the tractor. Any Thoughts????

How often does the fuse blow and do you have any idea as to what actions cause it to blow? Sounds to me like you may have a pinched wire somewhere or whatever that fuse circuit is powering has something that intermitently draws enough juice to blow the fuse or is shorting out. To trouble shoot the problem you are going to have to try to recreate this conditions as best as possible and retrace the wire circuit. What does this fuse circuit power? It is not an easy process and it falls to tracing steps along the ciruit with your voltmeter and eye ball. Maybe even mice have made a home somewhere in your tractor. It never seems to be the obvious. ....

Found the problem. The main fuse (30A) on the other side was blown (only thing I didn't check). I checked all the wires I could see but can't see any wire that may be pinched. On the fuse panel, the top 7.5A fuse is the one that is blowning all the time. If I've been using the tractor, then get back on and restart the tractor, the fuse blows. So I get off, and put a new 7.5A fuse in and it works again. Starting to get real annoying!!! Guess I need to start looking at other tractor brands... ....

I would be even more concerned about what may be blowing a 30 amp fuse. Have you given that circuit a looksee? ....

If it's not too much work you might pull the ignition switch and check it out. There have been reports of bad TC ignition switches causing blown fuses, but I don't know if the particular fuses you mention are affected or not. Apparently the switch can short out. ....

My guess is that you have an intermittent dead short on the 7.5 Amp circuit. If the 7.5 Amp circuit is downstream of the 30A fuse, it is just a question of time which blows first. The lower rated fuse is usually going to go first, but maybe the thermal stress of many shorts weakens the 30A fuse so it occasionally goes first.

I once had a Mustang whose headlights would go out occasionally at the worst times. It had an automatic reclosing breaker instead of a fuse, so they always came back on after a while. I couldn't reproduce it while checking the wiring for months. Finally one night, I stood on the trailer hitch and jumped up and down to try to cause the problem. The headlights went out AND I saw arcing at my feet! The body shop that had repaired the rear end a few years before hadn't bothered to replace the grommet for the wire going through the trunk wall to the license plate light. It's insulation had finally worn through from vibration and occasionally shorted.

When I get a short to persist long enough to test the wiring, I jumper a 12V bulb across the dead fuse so I can see results of my efforts break and make the short momentarily. A bright bulb gives the indication of the short. Of course you will want to make sure the light bulb in line with power to some electronics won't hurt anything by limiting current to the load.

You might ask your dealer for a copy of the schematic for the tractor. It may help you test the circuit. ....

I think this same subject has been hashed out several times here but I can't recall if there were any conclusions. I'm about out of time this morning or I'd try some archive searching.

I seem to recall that maybe there's a surge issue through relay or solenoid windings. If so, it's a design problem and there should be a factor fix for the problem. An inductor may help slow down a surge but getting the value right would be a little tricky. I wouldn't do any modifications that might compromise a warranty unless dealer approved. ....

SAME PROBLEM ON MY TC33D I CALLED NEW HOLLAND FACTORY AND THEY RECOMENDED THAT I REPLACE THE 10 AMP FUSE WITH A 10 AMP RELY . THERE WAS A RUNNING CHANGE TO CHANGE THE 7.5 FUSE TO A 10 AMP FUSE ON THE START CIRCUIT AND THIS SOLVED MY STARTING PROBLEM ....

Sounds like Gibson may be onto something. Larger fuses are good fixes for fuses that blow provided it's a solution backed by factory engineers. Sometimes engineering designs are more conservative than necessary. Dealers can contact their factory reps to come up with solutions for this kind of problem but they might to verify that everything on the tractor is working normally. I'd be aware that the blown 30A and 7.5A fuses may be separate problems.

Sounds like this should be the dealer's problem if the tractor is under warranty. Nothing wrong with trying to help and save transportation costs by finding minor problems yourself. Short trouble-shooting can get nightmarish and having a wiring schematic is a requirement. The basic approach is to grab, wiggle, tug and push every component and wire run until the fuse blows and then that only gives the general location of the problem. It also doesn't always work. With a repair manual, some circuits can be checked with an ohmmeter for abnormally low resistance. I must have spent a week and gotten 10 cents per hour before I found a problem on a British motorcycle. It's good not to get caught up in this type problem if you can avoid it.

I have the same problem as of yesterday. I was aware that these tractors blow ignition switches all the time (from the sales man that delivered the tractor). He was blaming people who hose off the tractors and cause the switch to short out. So he was aware that they short out, what he was not aware of is that the switch is pretty much water proof and protected from water getting on it. So, it sounds like a defect in the switch design to me. I bought a new switch and installed it. It did not fix the problem. Everything works except like you said it seems there is no battery in the machine.
Gibson, I don't understand what you are saying "There was a running change to change" What does that mean? Where do I dind the blown fuses/relay left side or right?

My TC29 wouldn't start at the dealership due to a bad relay (available at NAPA or any auto supply store). The relays and fuses are behind the right side panel; you have to remove the panel to get to them. After the initial bad luck, I have 500+ hours on my TC29 with no further blown fuses or relays.

personally ive never seen a bad switch on a 33 or a 29 but the fuses do pop every once in a while and you don't replace them with a relay you replace them with a circut braker ....

With the blown fuse. The NH dealer told me to go to Advance Auto and get a 10amp breaker to replace the 7.5 amp fuse. He said that New Holland knew of the problem and said this was the fix. Sure enough, it fixed the problem...haven't had any problems ever since. It was the top fuse in the fuse box on the tractor's right side under the hood as a reference. ....

My 2003 33D has had the ignition switch replaced due to no stating (couldn't turn key). I replaced it myself and couldn't believe that the switch they used isn't even water-resistant (mine was plugged with dust, dirt and weed seeds) The switch is actually and interior-only switch. The new one had silicone sealant sloppily slathered on the back of it. The turn signal uses the same basic switch and it isn't sealed either. ....

I am having the same problem with my TC45D! Bugger keeps blowing the 8 amp fuse. Whoever owned it before me used a 7.5 amp(I know why...I can't find the 8 AMP either). Anyway, I think I will try the 10 AMP breaker and see what happens! Thanks for the info. ....
