Life changes as we get older. After reading Big Frank's thread, I decided to open my own post. At the age of 62, my DIL found me a nice retirement job in Buffalo NY which is 335 miles from my home base in Hyde Park NY. I want to see my granddaughter and son more often and to position my wife to have someone to look after her when I croak.

I began my job 2 weeks ago working as a database specialist in Buffalo, staying with my son and family. I am trying to dig my hoarder wife out of our house in Hyde Park and get rid of a lifetime of possessions. I have no idea where we will end up living in Buffalo. In the meantime I will be travelling home every weekend to help my wife clean out the house. This will take months, hopefully not years.

Frank, good luck to all of us! We wait for the blue sky.

Crunch,

That sounds great...

So many consulting jobs that I see want you to have so many specific things in your background at the expert level that only a God like individual would qualify! And they always add must be able to work under extreme pressure and offshore teams etc.. Then they add that the job is thousands of miles away for 6 months....

Good luck with the transition...family is so important. I keep telling my wife we cannot make plans to move south until we see where my in college kids wind up... I would rather go someplace warmer than NJ.

Probably will not happen.

Crunch and Dennis;
I'm not a veteran commuter, just a year or so after high school I drove 60 miles round trip to a job, after that about three miles to care for livestock on a "Distant" farm.
But this isn't the topic you guys are going after, yes we tend to follow our kids when we retire so we are content to stay in Icebox, Iowa. Four of our five kids have settled within the Cedar Rapids, Marion metro where we are now, the fifth is near the Twin Cities, that's about five hours as the Chevy goes.
Several of our friends and old classmates that are still sucking air have gone south, we considered it but Kids and Grandkids tend to keep us close. At risk of upsetting those in the south, I just never cared that much for snakes, alligators and big bugs, we have little bugs up here but they all freeze to death in the winter. when it gets too cold or too hot I just don't go out.
To each his or her own I guess.

Frank.

Not trying to upset my friends in the frozen North...the snakes that craw on their belly is not the ones we worry about...it is the ones which still have legs. Seems to be a real big nest on the eastern shore.

Learned long time ago we all have a special place in our heart for where we were raised, Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz said it best, "there is no place like home."

Living where I do have many friends, clients and neighbors from all states North of here up to about as far west as Minnesota. Funny to me there is very few from southern states south or west of here. Hear the reasons for moving here, not so cold, very seldom have snow, lower cost of living, golf courses, how liberal the area they lived was, shows or such they enjoy. However I know it would be hard for me to pack up and move away from my family and friends. We do see moves that are two and three generation because of that.

Crunch on the house, my father in law passed almost 14 years ago and my mother in law moved in with us about 2 years ago. We kept her house in tack till about 2 months ago and finally knew doing so was foolish and began the taking it apart and deciding what went where. Some to each of the 2 girls, some to grandchildren, and other family members. Hard work. It took us about 2 months to do that and the house is less than 1/2 mile from us. It also took longer than we expected to get it ready to rent and is now taking it longer to rent that we expected. Said all that to tell you the process is slow, for us we had to handle and discuss who needed, wanted or would benefit from each piece. When it was all completed my wife told me, I am so glad it has been done. As hard as it was it was done with my Mama's input. I am glad do not have to face this when she passes. Sadly since June 10th, house was not on the rental market my mother in law was admitted to the hospital and has since then been either in hospital or rehab and will belief she will be able to return to live with us. We all have the responsibility to prepare for tomorrow, whether we be there or have moved on. That means preparing to close the house here for the home, there. kt ....

Five years later I am still in Lockport NY. Life is a journey. After 36 years of marriage my wife passed away unexpectedly two years ago. I don't need sympathy, I have already remarried to a wonderful woman and have begun a new life. I have been working for 4 years as a professor and am probably one of the few that voted for Trump. There are more than you think who are conservative at the university.

I miss the guys in tractorpoint. My tractor now sits at my son's house but I kept the trailer and bought a pickup so I can retrieve it every now and then. I wish I could smell diesel more often. I hope to get to the farm show in Seneca Falls this year! ....

Great to hear from you... correct me if I am wrong but I think you kept a beer keg in a frig in the man cave in your old house. Ah the smell of diesel and the taste of dark beer, the latter long given up in my case since 2004...

So you still trailer the tractor so you must still have some property that is great.

Keep in touch

Glad to hear you're doing well and enjoying life.

Everybody start singing "it's a small world after all.....".

I've been doing a big job in Swainton NJ for the last while and flying my self back & forth on a regular basis. Of course that means clearing customs on the way in, about 10 miles east of Lockport at the Niagara Falls Int'l Airport. From there my routing, to avoid Philly & NYC congest ion puts me down to Stroudsburg PA (where I stop to visit a good friend and fuel up) an then south to just east of Trenton NJ.

I've often wondered if you're looking up Dennis, now I'll have to wonder about Crunch too. LOL

Dennis, you live in some very pretty country!

Best of luck. ....

Hi Murf,

If you are approaching the Broadway VOR BWZ send me a text and I am on the next ridgeline across the valley 5 miles south east.

Watch out for the commercial jets because they use this route to land in Newark and fly pretty low on occasion.

Plus in summer Trump is at Bedminister so Fighter Jets patrol the no fly zone which I am on the north western border.

Software consultants usually have crazy long commutes for assignments that require their specialty. I am based in NJ and had a consulting assignment in Phoenix Arizona.

On the plus side I would leave on Monday morning at dawn and leave for home Thursday after lunch.

Because of the time zones I would get into the office in Phoenix around 9:45 AM. The rewind was brutal getting home at 2 AM ET.

That was then, now 30 miles is too much :-(

Good memories here. Does Frank still make it to TP? We exchange letters about once a year but this year think twice. Wow things are speeding up for me.

My youngest son in law is considering leaving his current job where he writes programs for a phone company and going to an independent work. All he could say is the gross income is better.

As to people moving here from up North, neighbor who moved here from western Maryland told me this week, wow they are moving in here really fast! Yes they are. When we moved here 20 years ago a tractor or combine going by was common. Now they are rare. I feel like Daniel Boone, not enough elbow room. ....

Hello all, thanks for the replies! I was glad to hear from Hardwood in the other "Just for Fun" thread, I think of you and your farm often, hang in there. I am still at NIagara University teaching in my 5th year, lucky to still have job. The University had a ransomware attack earlier this year which shut us down for a couple of days followed by the COVID fiasco. I was used to working online due to my days at IBM so the adjustment required some work but I already had much of my courses online.

Life has been good to me, I feel rejuvenated working around the house to accomplish things for my wife. I got tired of having to "borrow" my 4310 back from my son, so a couple of months ago I bought a New Holland Workmaster 25S with a backhoe which is perfect for me in my 1 acre lawn. It isn't the cadillac that the 4310 was but it's like heaven being able to just hear that little diesel come alive when I need it (which has been quite often lately).

I went to Farm Days in Seneca Falls for the first time last year. It was pouring rain but I managed to find Art White's booth. Unfortunately Art wasn't there but I did ask about him. Murf, Denis - sorry I didn't respond to your comments in 2019 - I commit to checking TP more often. Ken, thanks for thinking about the old gang! I am 20 miles east of Niagara Falls, 10 miles south of Lake Ontario. There are lots of wineries here, 2 within walking distance. Arrow Head Spring Winery has some decent wine. Let me know if you are ever in the area. -Joe ....
