The orange glow plug indicator light doesn't come on during initial start up or when the tractor has been off more than 20 minutes. It's not just the dash light that is faulty. When the tractor is up to operating temp it will come on at re-start up but not after it cools down. Temps in the northeast are getting cooler and it's getting harder to start to up in the morning. I'm not ready to drop $500 for the shop manuals right now. Any thoughts?

Original battery, 6yrs. Tractor was delivered July 2005. I've been aware of the age of the battery and in full expectation of its imminent failure in the near future. The engine doesn't crank slow, just takes longer to start due to cold diesel. I noticed the dash light (or lack there of) about 2 months back but it hasn't been an issue till now with the falling temperatures. It has been somewhat intermittent up till now but I've always been aware of a "click" when the fuel heater (as it's called in the operators manual) reaches temperature and shuts off along with the amber dash light. The clicking sound comes from behind the dash cluster and to the left where the fuse block is concealed. The operators manual no information on the individual function of the fuses or what the lone relay supports. I turned the key to the on position and turned on all of the lights and signals. All function properly so I don't suspect the battery but I'm keeping an open mind. At times the glow plug light will come on when I restart the tractor shortly after having been turned off. Usually within the first 20 minutes when the tractor is still warm. After it cools down it's back to the same old problem.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks, Terry ....

Yeah, it's 6 books/volumes combined and it's even more expensive if you buy them piece meal. I can't find them on pdf anywhere.

I would put heavy jumper cables from your car to the battery and see if that changes the glow light issue. To warm the plugs takes alot of current and an old battery may not be up to it.

Batteries can be finicky and yours is old (I am in the same situation on battery age, mines 7 years old, so I expect it to fail anytime now), when I was laid up and had to use Honda Service to check my car battery, they said a 5 year old battery passed all their tests as good. But it was giving us starting problems. So I had them replace it anyway, problems gone.

May well be something else, but might as well start on the low hanging fruit instead of $500 manuals. Also pull the battery connections wire brush and lub as well ....

I'll try it tomorrow. It sounds quite plausible now that I've wrapped my head around it. I'll let you know how I make out.
Thanks, Terry ....

It always pays to have an open mind. I'm amazed and dumbstruck! Many thanks! I hooked the truck up to the tractor this morning, turned the tractor key to on. The glow plug light came on as the truck dogged down. I hadn't realized just how much the glow plugs draw. I'll get to the New Holland dealer on Monday ( Tractor Supply batteries are crap, speaking from vast experience). This is my first venture into this kind of forum and I'm a satisfied convert (my beef cattle/vegetable farmer buddy refers to this kind of trouble shooting as 'high tech redneck'). This has saved me a tremendous amount of time and potential cost. I hope this helps some other poor slob like me in the future.
Again, many, many thanks
Terry ....

As far as service manuals go, I worked out a deal with my local dealer to pay $1 a printed page from their shop's mechanic's library. The cashier runs the copier and I tell her what section or pages I want. Price wise, it works out to be slightly cheaper for selected pages versus the whole thing. ....

I have a small excavator which was giving me a problem with the hyd not working (those which use solenoid to control the flow) when first cranked. One time it would and next not and so forth. Checked all I knew to and was of the opinion it had to be a control panel that is oh $500 or more. When happened to replace battery and what do you know that issue went away. It seems the old battery was strong enough (amps) to crank the engine but voltage was too low to engage a relay to operate the solenoids. Now the battery has some age on it and it is sitting for a month or more between uses that problem has come back. Wish had maintenance charger on it but no power there and with leaves on trees full shade. Might be workable with solar charger now the leaves are off, oh one more chore. ....

The problem is the relay. I had the same problem , tried the battery fix...no luck, changed the relay and works like new.
Beware, the dealer will charge you $70 for it. I acquired it on EBay for $9.
It's found by searching for a kubota glow plug relay or timer. It's made by NGK and works perfect in our tractors.
Good luck ....
