Several years ago, there was a post asking about augers for a John Deere Model 31 PTO-driven post hole digger, with a 1 3/8" output shaft. I can't tell from that thread where the OP finally found an auger that would fit that size output shaft. Most of the diggers appear to have a 2" (or larger) shaft. I have an old (International Digger Company - apparently no lopnger exists)) post hole digger, that works great, but now has a bent auger, which I want to replace. Does anyone know of a source for augers that would fit on a smaller output shaft?

Good point. That is one option I am thinking about. The other is to have a metal shop simply create a shim / bearing, that will span the gap between a 1.375" shaft and a 2" auger opening.

The reason for asking was simplicity - ifg augers are still obtanable, then I would go that route. Right now, it doesn't look promising. ....

Try a bearing supplier (store or website).

The auger doesn't have to fit really snug on the shaft.

IMHO the simple solution is to get a piece of 2" O.D. steel tube with 1/4" wall. The inside diameter will be 1.5" and so within 1/8" of the shaft you need.

Then all you have to do is cross drill it for the bolt to go through.

Best of luck. ....

I suspect you are right. That thought crossed my mind as well.

Good point as well. I looked at some steel bushings, and can get one that is 2" OD and 1.5" ID, but they seem pricey ($35). If I can find a short piece of steel tube of the same dimensions, it would be cheaper.

Contact any steel supply shop or fabricating and tell them you need a piece of "2" 0.25" wall DOM tube".

The term "DOM" means "drawn over mandrel", the steel is cold rolled into a tube, then welded, then drawn over a mandrel (die) to create a finished product the correct dimension.

The 3" or 4" you need is scrap to anybody else.

Best of luck. ....

To bring this to closure - I found a piece of 2" OD DOM scrap (at no cost). Drilled 1/2" holes to align with the holes in the (smaller) digger drive shaft and the new 2" ID auger. Works like a charm. Thanks for the advice. Should have done this several years ago, instead of wasting time looking for an auger for the smaller shaft. ....

I have also been wrestling with this JD model 31 post hole digger I recently purchased. I see the 1.375 output, but that goes into a 2-1/2 inch diameter fitting which the owners manual describes as the output shaft. This is a pretty heavy duty digger.

It came with a 9 inch auger and I haven't managed to break it free from the output shaft yet. I would like to get a larger auger like a 16 inch. I see that danuser sells an auger for a 2-9/16 inch output shaft. Any opinions? I will attach some pictures.

I finally managed to break the post hole digger output shaft free. I soaked with PB Blaster, liquid wrench and then dug holes without shear bolt with no success. I then went to the internet, created a 50/50 mix of transmission fluid and acetone, poured around output shaft and let sit overnight. Next day I dug hole without shear bolt and the output shaft came free from the auger! Hooray.
