If it ran ok for a few days and now won't, I bet you'll find you have a small leak on the intake side, the leak is sucking air and breaking the vacuum.

Otherwise just open the intake hose and pour it full from the pump end.

Best of luck. ....

Your posts seems to generate (to me anyway) more questions than it does answers. The topic title suggests you want to know how to prime a pump, but the text suggests the problem is about an engine or motor that won't start.
1. Is the pump driven by an electric motor or an internal combustion engine?
2. If internal combustion, is that what you meant by "it ran fine for 4 days"?
3. Is the owner's manual not available?

A few other thoughts. Since you are draining a pond could it be the intake on the hose is clogged by trash? Could it be deep enough the water level has dropped lower than the lift capacity of the pump? There is also the possibility it has worn enough while running to prevent it pulling the water.

If the last one you might be able to lower the pump. A pump can push much better than it can pull.

thanks for the ideas - i filled the intake hose from the pump end and that got it going again - didn't realize the intake has a one way flow valve
I am trying to see what soil conditions are at bottom of pond so i might be able to patch area where it leachs into lower pond and make it deeper to possibly irrigate fields - any thoughts if it could hold fish? ....
