Hi everyone,
I need your help again. I'll looking at purchasing an used 48 backhoe. It appears its been stored outside and is missing a hydraulic coupling. Thus, it's been exposed to the elements. Any comments, thoughts, what to look for or do BEFORE I purchase it would be GREATLY appreciated! I have an JD 4600 tractor.

I'm not sure there's much you can do other than give it a very good inspection. You want to make sure the pins look tight and have been well greased. Check all surfaces to look for any bending or abuse. A good hint is if you see the paint cracking in an area that area may have been stressed. Look for rust, esp. on the cylinder rods. A little surface rust elsewhere won't harm it. Visually check the hydraulics to look for obvious leaks. Other than that I wouldn't know what to look for. Does it come with the subframe mount? ....

Assuming this fits your tractor, ask if you can install and operate it first. If not, wonder why? Test at low rpm so you can feel any slack or wear. High speeds help you miss any slop. Be careful the missing fitting has not allow trash to enter the system before you connect to it. Of course to test if you will end up with full rpms also. kt ....

The other points given to check far as pin wear, sprung or missing parts are good things to check. What model tractor is the subframe meant to fit that comes with the hoe? Mine is on a 4310, the subframe I have fits a 4300 thru 4410, but I'm sure that your 4600 will take a different one. I'm not aware of anything on the hoe its self that needs to be changed to go from one model tractor to the other, just the subrame. Last I knew you could still order a subframe for differet models thru a Deere dealer, but I'd check that first if you need a different one before I bought the hoe. Frank. ....

First- I just want to say- I appreciate everyones input!-thanks.
This subframe- where does it attach? under tractor or behind? There's a kit #bm20285 I believe is the #. Is this the subframe? Would this subframe get in the way of a MID mound mower/ PTO? Note- I only use mower maybe 3 times a year.
Again- any more comments are more than welcome. This is a big purchase for me even though it's a used piece of equipment.

The subframe kit attaches to the ring of bolts that hold thr rear axle housings to the mainfrasme of the tractor. Looking at the rear axle housing if the rear wheel was off there about 7 bolts if I remember correctly bolts that you remove and bolt the subframe on with different LONGER and I think STRONGER bolts. The subframe is left on the tractor when the hoe is off, it takes a half day to put the subframe on so it isn't something you want to remeve. With the subframe on the tractor it is about a 10 minute deal to mount the hoe, and that is taking your time at it. I don't have a mid mount mower so I cannot speak with much authority, but I don't think the subframe clashes with any mid mount systems, but check with a dealer for sure. I checked the Deere website on 48 hoes and they do list a different subframe for the bigger tractors, but listed no part numbers. If there is no subframe with the hoe, there should be, it is part of the hoe not the tractor. I've heard of 48's being sold at auction where the sellers did not take the subframe off the tractor and it went with the tractor and the hoe buyer unaware that he needed the subframd didn't get one. The subframe will be two "C" shaped heavy steel plates complete with the proper length and strength bolts to attach them to the tractor. Do not use the original bolts that hold the rear axle housing to the tractor when you mount the subframe, they aran't long enough or strong enough. Hope this helps. Frank. ....

I've e mail the seller about this subframe. They stated JD didn't sell one for the 4500/4600 series. I've contacted a dealer- he was unsure of this statement. I believe I have seen what you mentioned about the parts but no part # with JD online parts catalog.
Was is easy to "re attached" some thing like a bug hog. or did the plates/ subframe get in the way?

Bvinduck; I did forget to mention that in the info from the Deere website on 48 hoes that the subframe for your series tractors is called a "Weldement". to me that says that you get a kit which is welded up to an existing subframe for the smaller tractors. Your question about the subframe being in the way for other attachments; No not anything I have encontered would call for removing the subframe. When you mount the hoe on the tractor you must remeve the three point hitch lower arms and the upper three point link, a five minute job going on or off. Mounting the hoe after subframe installation just taking you time to be sure you do the steps in proper sequence is ten minutes tops with no lifting, the tractor three point upper arms do that for you. Mounting of the hoe it'self is pretty simple long as you have parked the hoe on a reasonably level surface. Hope this helps. Frank. ....
