The tractor will start in gear (also with the pto engaged). I was reading that owners manual and it states that there is a switch that is supposed to keep that from happening. All of the other safety features work properly - the manual has a writeup on how to test everything.

Am I missing an override, or should I look for a problem?

My 4310 will not start if the elecric PTO switch is on. Sounds like you are missing a safety feature. Not sure what you mean "in gear". I assume you have an HST. My HST will start as long as the forward or reverse pedals and not depressed. ....

Do you have a midmount PTO as well as the rear PTO? I am not sure if the midmount PTO turned on will prevent startup since it won't engage unless the rear PTO switch is on. The REAR PTO being on WILL prevent startup. ....

Exactly which test(s) in the owners manual fails? The Neutral Start Switch test? Gear models have a neutral switch that detects when the transmission is in neutral. Hydro models have a jumper across where the switch would be. If the switch is bad or the harness is damaged maybe it will give the symptoms you describe. Here's sort of a catch-all suggestion. Crawl under the tractor and inspect all the wiring harnesses. Sometimes a stick can catch and pull a wire out. Make sure they're all tucked up tight with some zip-ties. ....
