Has anyone tried the 5300 JD tractors? I like the price and features but am a little worried about the reliability.
Price of 5301 looks good.

John,
I think you meant the 5103 tractor of the 5003 series machines. I have dislexic fingers as well. ;O) In my opinion, these machines are among the most reliable tractors Deere manufactures as there are among the most basic in design which is not such a bad thing in my view. Depending upon the applications you are considering, particular front end loader duty; you may want to go with one of the 5005 series machines such as the 5105 or 5205.
These machines are great for brush cutting, moving hay bales, and hay baling and other high hour applications that do not require special features or modifications to the tractor.
If you could expand a bit in detail as to what exactly you had in mind for you particular applications; I could give a more detailed reply.
In any case, the less bells and whistles, the less there is to go wrong and cause problems. I think you will find these machines to be very reliable and a great buy for the dollar as are the 90 series compact tractors by Deere the 790 and 990. ....

Yes, I did mean the 5103, and thanks for the reply. Primary applications are bush hogging over land with a lot of old terrace rows which almost requires the float feature and draft sensing for turning a little land (these features my old JD 950 doesn't have).
I am also thinking that I might like but not sure I need a 4 WD with FEL. I have a farm of 114 acres which I run cattle on and so would need to handle the large round bales of hay.
Price and reliability are also important considerations and I have not seen any on line comments on the 5003 JD tractors ??

It may not mean much, but when I was in the market for a new utility tractor, I talked with a guy that worked with the 5003 & 5005 series units over in Europe. He really pushed me towards those because of the reliability of them compared to the 4000 series. I was so darn close too. But the mid-mount mower on the 4000 series and the possibility of my wife needing to drive it pushed me to hydrostat and the 4000 series.
But for your application, sounds like the 5003/5005 series would be an exellent choice. ....

When you threw in the "large round bales" that puts you in a different category if you want to pick up large round bales with a FEL. The 5000 series tractors in my opinion are borderline at best for this task. The guys baling my hay are forced to use the 3 pt. hitch hay spike and hydraulic cylinder assist to move small round bales with their International 484. It can barely handle these bales. Large round bales would be around another 750 to 1,000 lbs. I would suggest that you take a serious look at the 6003 series tractors and get the heaviest duty FEL possible. Deere currently has a special offer for the 6403 for $26,990. The 6003 series tractors are very much like the old 4000 Twenty series machines of years ago that are STILL VERY popular and in use today. The 6003 series machines are a little larger than most want for some tasks but they are probably to most versital tractor for a farm such as yours. This hp range tractor will allow you to run a round baler in the future should you expand into that area as many cattle farmers do. The 6603 is one of my favorite machines and is a smooth and versital tractor with that 414 inline 6 cylinder. It also has the grunt to do just about anything you can put it to. I would also strongly recommend 4WD with this machine as well. The 6003 series machines also offer you the option of a cab with heat and A/C which may come in mighty handy depending upon what part of the country you live.
I realize you are considering a John Deere but do yourself a favor and take a look and test out a Kioti DK65S. This is a great tractor in this size class and application for nearly half the price when you figure in 4WD and cab. ....
