Danny, it's not at all unusual to experience loose wheel bolts or nuts on new tractors. Read your operators manual. The manual for my John Deere 5310<br>States the following: 1. After driving the tractor about 100 yds. and before placing it under load, retighten wheel hardware to specified torque. 2. Check wheel hardware after working 3 hours and again after 10 hours. 3. Check wheel torque again at 50 hours and at every 50 hour service interval thereafter.<br><br>

Well Ladies and Gents, have I got a can of worms. Through a lot of advice and information I found on the boards here (I Thank you all), I decided on my first compact purchase: a 4wd hst b2100, 60

The first problem came up when the mower was delivered. The mower deck gave the symptoms of having one blade's pulley a slightly different size than the other two. There would be a clockwork regular clang from the blades, related to the engine speed. Checking the blades showed that two blades in question were making contact.. not every rotation, not even every other turn, but just hand spinning showed that the geometry between those two blades was changing.
The dealer sent the delivery truck right back to pick the tractor up and return it to the shop. That was nice enough, so I can't complain about that service. I guess I'm a little curious how that could have slipped through their set up procedure, though.. and I'm again without a tractor until they get this sorted out. So, are setup mistakes normal?
Now I've found out that the same dealer has on his lot a 4wd hst B2150 (not sure of hours or year), outfitted with a 60" loader, mower, and backhoe for a shade under 18k. I had told the dealer when I called initially that THAT was the configuration I was ultimately looking for(attachment-wise), but I settled on what I got because I can't afford a backhoe right now. (OK, I would have needed the grader blade added to the 2170's package..)
All that said, I'm looking for input in the following areas:
1) what are the noteworthy differences between the b2170 and the b2100?
2) does the price of the used rig sound right, assuming has, say 500-1000 hours on it and is in good shape? I know, the ad doesn't address the deck size, so I assume it is smaller, nor does it address engine hours, so they aren't exactly bragging it being low. Ballpark guesses are fine.
3) though I can't change it, did I do OK on the 2100's package?
4) how 'cautious' should I be about this dealer, being that he didn't set up the tractor right, and he didn't even suggest a very similar used tractor that would have been closer to what I really wanted (given the 2100 and 2170 are at least close to being the same machine) and saved me long term money.
5) would I be out of line switching to the used tractor, being that I haven't had the new b2100 at my place for even an hour?
Sorry, I guess I'm mixing a lot of griping with questions, but this isn't what I expected making this purchase to be. Thanks for your time and responses.

Hi Mike,<br>This is Mike From Iowa. We co-miserated on the early model problems earlier. I wimped out and ordered a 4600. anyway, I still have the 4400 waiting for the new one to get here. I have all those symptoms and that is why I decided to get a different tractor. I don't have any faith in this transmission. the dealer told me that the drive system was different in the 4600hst. this is a huge tractor i hope i didn't make a mistake because i was begining to like the 4400 for the size of it. The only one of the things you mention that I don't have is the backing up on level ground. I don't know how this will help you but you know I have one too. my sypathies are with you, Mike

<br>I bought a '96 755 with 4wd, loader, ballast box, turf tires, 3 point hitch and about 400 hours for 12,400.00 a couple of months ago. Garage kept, it's in beautiful condition. The back hoe you'd be getting is easily worth a couple thousand dollars.. The price you quoted sounds fair to me. Geographic location can make the price fluctuate a bit.I'm in the Chicago area, and bought the tractor around Indianapolis.<br>The 755, I believe, is a little lighter tractor. Tractor alone weighs in at about 1750 lb. with 4wd. I agree with the other post, 4wd for loader work is a must! You will not be able to do much work with a 2wd, just mowing.<br>If you watch the posts on this board there are a lot of complaints about the 4100's. Not that JD is putting out an inferior product, but this is the first year for that model and it seems to have some kinks they need to work out. I looked at the 4100 and decided to buy

Pete - this is just how I handle my situation, so it might not apply to you, but here goes. I mow my land(4 acres of lawn, 4 of pasture ) with my garden tractor, not my 1700. Why? because my land is hilly, and the Kubota scares the hell out of me on slopes. I therefore set the kubota up to be the perfect machine for snow and heavy lifting/dragging/moving of stuff, so I put on ags and don't worry about the mowing. You already have a garden tractor, so why not get the best compact tractor for the other work you have to do, and do the lawn with the old garden tractor. 3 acres takes me about 2 hours - no big deal.<br>Just a suggestion,<br>PaulB

Chuck<br>I have a 4300 with a 430 loader. Using the belly mower plates, I mounted a 6 1/2 foot western plow with a short A frame, by building a quick-tach hookup to connect to the weight bar and the mower plates. It truly is a super setup, and I can drop it quickly by disconnecting the three hyd. hoses, then removing two bolts that hold it to the weight bar, and tipping it out from the connection to the mower plates. It allows me to move quickly to the 430 loader to bucket snow away if necessary. I was spoiled with a western plow on my JD 420 two-cylinder, and plow about 1000 feet of driveway in two or three passes in the deepest snows we get around Madison, WI for the past 30 years. I wanted to get something similar hooked up on my year-old 4300.

The information on the small tractor faq page is out of date...at least for the ford tractors the newholland part numbers are no longer available. Safe-T-Cab makes rops for almost everything. They are very expensive. Some manufacturers have a special agreement with Safe-T-Cab to help defray costs. Go to the Safe-T-Cab site and send them email with your requirements.<br>http://www.saftcab.com<br>This whole topic annoys me to no end since it is such a necessary piece of safety equipment. I still think they should be provided by any dealer selling used tractors. There's got to be what...$35 of materials in a ROPS? I suppose the reason that the cost close to $1000 (if not covered on one of the plans) is due to insurance concerns...gimme a break!<br>Kim

To all ownwers of 1220-1720 hydro tractors... I have installed the WIX crossover hydro filter on 2 tractors now. Both times these filters were wrong.<br>the filter # is correct according to wix, and the filter fits on, but the size & number of holes in the filter is smaller & restricts oil flow causing cavitation & loss of power & possible hydro damage Jim

I would bet that Gempler's will have your tire size. I went to their web catalog and ordered a catalog. They sent it very promptly. Never ordered from it but they seem to be good folks. Check them out.

Thanks Rick B for your response. I've looked closely at both parts already - <br>the only mark on the pulley that could be a punch mark looks more like a flaw in the casting to me, and theres nothing on the end of the crankshaft. Unfortunately when the pulley came off it bounced around for a while possibly erasing a mark on the end of the crankshaft, altho' the crankshaft is made of pretty hard steel so I think thats unlikely. Any other ideas? Thanks Martin

Walt,<br>I don't know if you can choose another engine brand or upgrade. I do know that I have been using an Onan in my JD318 for many hours without a problem. It always starts, has plenty of power, and requires minimal maintance. I think the quality is worth the price.
