The current owner leases the 30 acres to a local farmer, who plans corn, beans, etc. My wife and I plan to "hobby" farm for now, growing hay, fruit trees and wine grapes. At the same time, we need to maintain a drive, remove brush, and "improve" some of the landscape around the house we're building, thin trees, etc. We don't plan on cutting and baling the hay ourselves, but I'd like to be able to run a small square baler if we decided to give it a try. I also don't plan to use the tractor for work that is better accomplished with a full-size backhoe.Anyone with similar tasks that can offer advice based on experience? Though I like saving money as much as the next guy, my "free" time is limited, so I prefer to buy a new or slightly used tractor that won't become a maintenance nightmare. If your compact has quite a few hours on the meter, and you continue to see smokeafter initial start-up, you may consider having a tune-up. Secondly, try premium Diesel if it is available in your area.Hopefully you haven't been using the "cheap" fuel, that is available at certain stations. This cheap fuel will cost you more in the long run, and IMHO tends to smoke/smell more. Even if a PROP Conversion kit for a diesel existed, I could not imagine spending the money for what it would probably cost. Roger mentioned an inexpensive,do it yourself idea for very little $.Its worth a try.. If money is an issue, you might want to consider 2nd hand. While still expensive, I've seen relatively cheap prices on some later model Fords. Don't expect too much of a discount from "new" for late model Kubota's, Deeres and the like, though. When my wife agreed on the tractor - I moved quick! She has seen the results a modern compact will provide and I don't think she'd balk at an attachment expense now.
