Is there a correct way to plow snow with a rear blade? My thought is that it should be done by backing up, so that you don't run over the snow before trying to plow it. Although some, on this and other discussion boards, agree with me, others say you should plow in forward. They say this puts less strain on the plow, and that constantly turning around puts too much strain on you. Is there a correct answer? Or, is it, like I suspect, like so many other topics, just a matter of opinion? Reading the various discussions, especially those related to Green vs. Blue vs. Orange, reminds me of the old adage, "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one, and everybody thinks everyone else's stinks."

If I pull the tractor in the garage forward, I plow in reverse. If I backed the tractor in, I plow going forward. I find it makes very little difference. Where I live it is not uncommon to have to plow 30 or more inches of snow at a time. ....

Stan,I too am from NE PA, near Shickshinny. A post from Shickshinny is as rare as a hen's tooth. I began plowing my 700 ft. drive in the early seventies (8N, chains, & backblade) and have found that on my rough drive it is easier on the equipment to plow while going forward...when you hook up on a rock you usually bounce the plow over it. When you hook up going backwards you usually hook up!!! and boiinngg do some damage. My backblade would do well as part of a smiley face. Even when I have angled the blade to lean far into the snow, forward, for me, is better in the rough. On my Dad's paved drive direction matters little. ....

OK guys don't laugh, I have never plowed snow, but will need to this coming winter. I have a 38 hp Case International tractor with a 6 ft blade, 2 wd. Will that do the job or will I need a 4 wd. I will be in Western PA. What is the best technique. Angle the blade and work forward pushing it off to the side or taking a little at a time all the way down and off the drive? Tony ....
