Hi all. Before purchasing my JD 4200 (Hydro, 4WD) I spent a lot of time at this site and saw several references to a JD satisfaction policy. I thought the deal was that you could upgrade/change tractors within 30 or 90 days and apply the purchase price toward the new equipment. My 4200 is having some trouble mowing up steep hills (very steep). I have to slow down to keep the engine from stalling. So, I contacted JD this morning to inquire about their upgrade policy. The answer I got was that there is no such thing for compact tractors. They do take lawn and garden equipment back but not tractors. Oh great. I then contacted the local dealer I purchased it from and relayed the power problem I'm having. They promised to get back to me soon.Is anyone aware of an "official" JD satisfaction policy that covers tractors? I only have 12 hours on this 4200 and it's looking like I'm stuck with it. BTW - I'm not slamming the 4200 tractor. Other than the power issue, I like it.Thanks for any feedback-

Greg, John Deere's "policy" is called "The John Deere Promise" which only applies to lawn tractors and mowers. Give me your address and I'll mail you a hard copy. ....

I had a similar problem trying to scarify uphill with my 4100. The easy solutionwas to turn it around and work downhill. Problem solved, although each passrequired me to turn around, drive up the hill, engage dirt downhill. My JD dealertold me (when I was shopping) "the 4100 will do (virtually) anything the larger oneswill, it will just take longer." (I know it doesn't take a hoe). For MY uses, I haveto agree with him. On the bigger, earth engaging tasks, I just have to be morepatient, and sometimes head downhill. All said, I'm happy, the 4100 handles 80%of my tasks without any sign of needing more power. All jobs are still done in amere fraction of the time it used to take me. Best of luck to you. ....

Not being able to see what you are mowing I am guessing a little bit here. Remember your tractor is new and the mower is new. They are not even broken in yet. New equipment will always take extra HP when new until everything gets polished and broken in. I would imagine your available HP at the PTO is proably down a little now due to higher internal friction losses etc. Have you dealer put the tractor on the dyno to make sure it is developing full power once it is broken in. ....

Greg,I assume you're talking finish mowing. I mow up a pretty steep hill w/ my 4200 hydro w/ 60" mid mower w/o too much problem. I'm sure you're already using low range and a little extra throttle. I also remove all the additonal weight when finish mowing. I've seen some post saying the parking brakes were misadjusted and dragging. Other than what the other follow ups have mentioned, I can't think of anything else that could cause the problem. Good Luck! ....

My apologies. I may have had some (or all) of the responsibility for passing on that information. That is what my dealer told me when I bought my collar shift 4200. Three days later he got to prove it and picked up the collar shift and put the hydro on order. I have since found out that he/I was wrong and it only applies to garden stuff. My dealer however still adheres to that policy whether it's a compact tractor or not and, for what it's worth, he has given me the best price I've seen on this board since last fall. But, again, sorry for the misleading information. ....

I to puchase a 4200 Hydro tractor 60 in deck, up a steep hill it had no power that was in B gear. I personally was very dissapointed seeing how I traded a JD 445 that would cut the same hill no problem, the ground speed was even faster.I think the tractor is under powered! I called my dealer and told him the problem and he ask if I wanted to bring it back,I told him I liked the tractor but not the power, he said I could up grade, and I did to a 4400, now I have to wait all over again. ....
