Knowing a bit more about what you want to leads me to also recommend a bit more HP. I think 25-27 HP would be a good compromise for your acreage and tasks. But, as I have stated, using my 43 HP Kubota to try to cut grass around my trees and outbuildings is a lesson in frustration; it is too big. And, if you are going bigger than the 4100, I would recommend the Kubotas (or maybe the NH); as stated in other posts, the 4000 series has far too many problems right now and who knows what will be developing down the line.

I,m new to the compact tractor phenomenon and the postings on this board have helped me tremendously to increase my knowledge. I still have a couple of questions regarding safe operation of a compact, implement pricing etc. I read a posting earlier concering the safe operation of a tractor travelling parallel to an incline 15 to 20 degrees max. What are the suggested limits when mowing perpendicular to the slope? Also I quoted a couple of different brands blue and green. Blue- TC29D SS MFWD with 60 inch belly mower, $17200. Green- 4300 MFWD hydro R4 folding rops (with new front axle design) $16925 including 60 mid mower, Landpride 2555 tiller- $2000, Landpride rear blade 72 inch 35 series $1000. Are these competitive prices? Also how effective will this tractor be by using the rear blade to push snow on a paved drive?

David, I respectfully disagree with your statement that the the 55 series tractors were built in Japan by Yanmar. I toured the Horicon Works factory in November of 1991. I watched the 55 series tractors being assembled.

I've had the same problem with my TC35D. I greased the pedals and that mostly fixed the problem. On my tractor, there is an adjustment the will increase the tension in the spring that returns the pedal to a neutral position. It has not been a big enough problem for me but should it happen again I'll increase the tension. Peter

Greg, I just sold my 755 in July and bought a 4700. My 755 was a 1988 w/800 hrs. #52 loader w/ a new 60" bucket, 60" JD belly mower, JD 413 rotary mower (bush hog) it was in exc. cond. and I got $11,200. Your price is in the ball park. You don't say what size loader it has or what condition it is in and that would make alot of diff. The loader is a good tool for snow removal, not as good as a blade or blower but it is MUCH better than shoveling. I have never owned a leaf/grass collection system but my local JD dealer was selling a 755 with one on it at the same time I was selling my 755, so they do make'm. Dan I bought my tractor in November of 1999. I now have 97 hours on it and the only problem I have had with it was the front axle. I did know about the axle problem before purchasing the tractor, and my Dealer made good on his promise to replace the axle. I also believe alot of the early problems with the 4000 seris was a failure of JD to do proper testing. As to why some owners are having problems getting there tractors repaied. Maybe they did not spend as much time shopping for a dealer as they did shopping for the tractor. I could have saved several hundred dollars from other dealers. I just believed the dealer I did buy from would provid better service, and I have no complants about there service. I believe that the JD tractors being built now are as good as any of the others, and believe that the ease of mounting & unmounting implements is much better than the any of the others. Chris

I park the tractor in a "V" shaped ditch by the roadway with the front and rear of the tractor facing the slopes. This leaves enough room to reach under and remove the blades. Be sure to set the brakes and remove the ignition key. I have noticed that a dry ditch is far more comfortable than a wet one.

Hi Joe, the manual that came with the loader safety latch for my JD 410 loader says it is for the 410 loader on the 4100. I have seen at least one other post where a dealer told the customer that his 410 loader did not need the safety latch because it only applied to certain serial numbers. I don't know if that is true and I suggest you check with your dealer to be certain. Even though I received the safety latch I have never had a problem with the 410 loader and I have used it for some very heavy lifting.

From what I have read the 4300 has independent PTO. Most tractors with independent PTO have an on and off switch on the dash in addition to the lever you have referred to. I must not be familiar with the type of set up that you have without a switch for the electro-hydralic clutch running the PTO.

I recently bought 4 additional acres next to the 2 that my homes sits on.Had the pine timber cut off of it and hired a dozer to come clean up afterwards. I now have 6 huge brush piles and hundreds of "stick ups".<br> Can anyone tell me whats the best method of leveling and cleaning up from this point.<br> I have a 2wd NH 1725,no "bush hog" yet,lanscape rake and box blade. i have been trying different tire and rim combinations partially out of curiousity partially due to boredom. the 970 jd really is a desent tractor that requires little work. i installed a pair of 19.5L x 24 Firestone Turf and Fields on titan 15 x 24 rims on the rear. these replaced the 13.6 x 24 R1's that were a bit agressive for my mowing chores (4 + acres of lawn). this combined with a pair of 10.5 x 31 x15 LT BF Goodrich all terrain TA on 15 x 7 JD rims on front work well (no turf damage, good steering, good floatation, excellent load capacity) but with the following limitations: the BFG tires pick up little stones and will not release them and for loader work in muck the BFG's are not agressive enough at slow speed (i am sure that above 40 mph they will clean themselves but the become slicks at tractor speeds). while looking for a source of front rims ( i wanted to try a set of 9.5 x 16 Firestone Turf and Fields) i came to realize that the JD 970 uses a metric bolt pattern ( 6 holes on a 150 mm bolt circle with a 90 mm center hole). while this may be common on japanese tractors it is not a common size for impliment rims. i purchased a pair of 16 by 8 rims with a 6 on 6 inch BC and a 4.62 center. i welded in an adapter ring to reduce the center to 90 mm and offset drilled the bolt holes to 5/8 inch for a 151 mm(close enough)bolt circle. just for the heck of it i remounted my 8 x 16 Firestone R1 bars on these rims and did a bit of loader work. i was impressed for 2 reasons, the offset was such that it widened the stance a bit and with the wider rim (jd uses a 5 in rim) the traction and floatation were improved. i am looking forward to winter in order to try the 19.5L T & F with the 8 x 16 R1 combo in snow. i don't mind changing front wheels as this is easy but the rears are a different story. i thought i would pass this info on just incase someone else wants to improve traction handling. less offset and wider rims help the front.ken<br>

I bought a JD 990 last month with mfwd and R-4 tires,also at the same time I bought a JD 613 rotary cutter.So Far I have 25 hours on the tractor and it has worked perfect.I also use mine for mainly brush hogging.I would buy another one with no hesitation and would recommend them to anyone wanting a good solid tractor that will do the job. Yes the 990 series tractors are out.I purchased one last month with mfwd,svc and R-4 tires for $16,000.Also added 300lbs. of weight to the front end and had the tires loaded.Just turned 25 hours on the tractor and 613 rotary cutter and both have performed flawlessly.The 990 is well built and rugged.Bill

I have a JD4300 tractor, 430 loader and 74 front blade. When I detach the blade and attempt to attach the loader, it is impossible because the parking stand strikes the front brackets used to hold the blade. About an inch more clearance is needed. Anybody have a simple solution other than to remove the brackets (a big job).

This my position on John Deere not being concerned about their customers complaint. How our you supposed to air your problems if you cannot contact anyone because of company policy by phone or letter.Who do think they are. God -almighty. How arrogant can they be. That shows they could care nothing best about their customers . This make you feel like you are sucker to purchase John Deere.

Bradley, supposedly the supplier was changed for the steering column shock in 2000, but I'm not sure, mine was defective. As far as the mechanics of the machine, it appears to be solid. The problems I have had are minor, but would have been somewhat costly if the mechanic were running to my home to make them out of warranty. The two most serious defects were a glow plug that kept blowing the main fuse and the gear box on the 72" belly deck that was grinding itself apart. Other things such as hydraulic leaks from bad loader hoses and some cosmetic glitches overlooked at assembly time are the extent of it. Oh, the dash fogs up when the temperature changes as well, factory rep says no repair for this. Hope this helps. Doesn't sound as bad as some of the 4000 series complaints I've read about here.
