David, I respectfully disagree with your statement that the the 55 series tractors were built in Japan by Yanmar. I toured the Horicon Works factory in November of 1991. I watched the 55 series tractors being assembled.

I know this is quite a bit after the fact, but I just joined the CTB. I was looking over the messages, and noticed the one about where the 55 series was made. It is my understanding the series was manufactured in Japan by Yanmar, and assembled in Horicon, so you're both correct. I hope this helps. ....

I believe Dennis is correct. They were made in Japan. The larger models have the Yanmar tag by the pto shaft instead of on the engine. Made in Osaka , Japan. ....

It sounds more like a matter of definition. A decade or two ago a lot of US companies started to put together products by doing final assembly based on foreign subassemblies. My understanding is that Yanmar provided the engine, sheetmetal, some of the drive train, electrics, and most of the other subassemblies for the 650-1090 series. So if Yanmar builds those parts in Japan and then ships them to the US where they are assembled at Horicon....well, who do you consider to have built the tractor?

Roger, It is a matter of definition as you say. This is how I like to define "Made in USA:" If it has 2/3 US Content, then it is American made, otherwise it isn't. To determine content you almost have to have an inside track on where things are made, and how much do they cost. I own a '96 Honda Goldwing SE. These motorcycles are designed and manufactured in Maryville, OH. Only the transmission gears and some other low dollar items are made in Japan. The engine is made in Anna, OH. This bike is American made, and so is the Accord. Over 12,000 people are employed in those two areas of Ohio. Harley-Davidson is proud to be American, but the last time I had a number 17% of their machines were foriegn made. You figure it out. Final assembly has much less direct labor than making an engine, transmission gears, etc, so for my opinion, the 'ole JD955 is a Japanese tractor. By the way, 56% of all the manufactured goods made in our good ole USA are sold overseas. In any kind of embargo or tariff war we would be the biggest losers. Nuff said by me. ....

Brian, the factory where your 755 was built depends on the year. When the tractors first went into production (July 1986) they were built in Horicon, Wisconsin. Production was transferred to Georgia later though I don't recall the year. ....
