Visited my local JD dealer today looking for a replacement for my 10 year old JD 870. He had me look at the 4400 4wd. I balked at the price, (close to $20k), and then he told me of Deere's soon to be released 990 model. Like the 790 which replaced the 770 with more hp, the 990 is supposed to be the old 970 with the additional 5hp the 1070 had. The dealer had limited information for me. Does anyone out there know more about the "new" 990? Specs, price, release dates?

The information that is available now is on our dealerships web page, www.jdlawns.com. The 990 is going to be like the 790 in marketing however not as many John Deere implements will be available for it. No Backhoe, and also no belly mower ....

I'm curious which loader will be available for the 990? The 790 loader (model 70) seems to have much less capacity than the 420 or 430 loaders. Is there something about the 90 series tractors that makes them less powerful in this regard? ....

I wonder if the 430 will really fit. I was looking at a 990 at local dealer and the loader hydraulics are all on the left side of the tractor. This is the opposite of the 4000 series tractors which have the hydraulics on the right. Perhaps it is easy to switch these things around? ....

The hoses are just switched from the right side over to the left side on the 4 tubes attached to the loader arms. The fittings are already in place to make this very easy. It is done this same way on the 420 loader I have mounted on my JD 955. You do need to order the mounting brackets for a 990. They are not the same as used on the 4000 series. ....

Thanks Jack. This is very helpful. Just curious, how do you like your 955? I'm considering a JD 790 but the operator area seems a little tight for my 6' 2" frame. I'm not sure I need all the power of a 990 (mowing and landscaping 10 acres) but it does seem a little easier to drive (longer more accesable gearshift). A JD 4300 seems pretty nice too but it's hard to go wrong with a proven design. ....

I really like the 955 for my mowing and landscaping applications. My number one consideration is that it has a hydrostatic transmission. I am totally sold on hydrostats for mowing and loader work. If most of your mowing is "open area" with few trees or buildings to contend with, a gear drive will serve you well at a lower cost. However, I think the hydrostatic transmission is a natural fit for most applications of a compact utility tractor. Operator station area has not been a problem for me--I'm 5'11". ....

I believe the 990's are out now. You should easily be able to pic one up for $16,000 (hopefully a little less with hagleing, but I've yet to have much luck with tractor dealers and hagling.) with 4wd, Dscv, and Ag tires. R4's will cost you approx $400, Turf tires $200. ....

Yes the 990 series tractors are out.I purchased one last month with mfwd,svc and R-4 tires for $16,000.Also added 300lbs. of weight to the front end and had the tires loaded.Just turned 25 hours on the tractor and 613 rotary cutter and both have performed flawlessly.The 990 is well built and rugged.Bill ....
