Some clarification might be good here. I was not aware of an automatic cutoff for the glow plugs. Nothing I rememeber from the manual either, besides recommended preheat times based on ambient temps.

As long as you've got a good gas trimmer, an L-series with finish mower should work fine up close to the house. Of course, it won't get as close as a rider.

Just a couple clarifications...

1. Only at IDLE is the 2-cyl rougher. The 2-cyl runs just as smooth as the 3-cyl engines at operating RPM.

2. The physical size and weight limitations of implements for the BX1830/2230 are identical to the BX1500, however since the 1830/2230 have more PTO horsepower, they are can more easily handle power hungery implements like a bushhog. (the 1500 will handle a 48" or smaller bushhog just fine, you just won't be able to knock down a forest in a single pass.)

If you want to use physically larger implements, you will need to look a the B-series machines. They have a higher lift capacity and can handle full Cat.1 implements (vs. limited Cat.1 for the BX-series).

The 1500 is plenty for your needs. The major differences between the 1500 and the 1830/2230 are:
1. 3-cylinder engines
2. more horsepower/torque
3. 2.3" longer wheelbase (to accomodate the 3-cyl engines)
4. slightly bigger tires
5. ~1" higher ground clearance (due to bigger tires)
6. 60"MMM offered (54" for the 1500)
7. Cruise control
8. Fuel gauge
9. 1.5 gal additional fuel tank capacity

There may be some other differences. Art?

A few things to consider:
1. The 1830 has an older engine design while the 1500 and 2230 have newer model engines. Not necessarily a bad thing. Just another difference between models.
2. The 2230 has about 1-1/2 times more PTO hp than the 1500, but the 1500's smaller tires put a higher percentage of engine power to the ground due to a shorter moment arm. This effectively reduces the power deficit somewhat.
3. There is no appreciable difference in weight between the 1500/1830/2230 models, so the amount of work each can do will be limited to traction vs. engine power in many cases.

IMHO the 2230 (along with similar models from other manufacturers) is overpowered for it's physical size and weight. Other's will differ in opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love horsepower as much as the next guy! It's a VERY capable machine, but it'll make you think that it can do more than it was really designed to do. I have never run out of power with my 1500. It'll mow tall wet grass, push heavy snow uphill, and tow a loaded trailer with ease. I'd say save $1000 and go with the 1500, or step up to a B-series machine if you want more umph.

Power is not an issue with the BX. If anything, it's overpowered for its size. For the work you described, a BX would be the perfect size. I agree 100% with the previous comments about stability. The only "safe" way is with a ROPS and a seat belt. The most stable configuration with a MMM is to back up and drive down slopes with your 4x4 engaged.

I had something similar happen to mine. I was mowing the bank of a shallow creek that runs through my property when the MMM became high centered. When I tried to back out I learned very quickly how efficiently bar tires can dig DEEP holes. I grabbed my garage floor jack and used it to lift up the ass end of the tractor. I then threw some firewood down in the holes and used a shovel to dig out around the mower deck. Finally, it just walked itself right out. Needless to say, I don't straddle the bank in that area anymore!

Get a bigger trailer.

Even if you were under the weight limit the trailer will not handle well on the road.

Do NOT change the oil before 50 hours. The contaminates that accumulate during the first 50 hours are essential to proper engine break-in. If moisture in the oil is a concern, the better bet would be to occasionally start the machine (maybe once a week or so) and run it for a while to steam off any moisture. But leave that oil in the crankcase for the recommended 50 hours. Trust the engineers at Kubota, they know what they are doing!

Last weekend my wife and I went out to get a Christmas tree at a nearby tree farm. The particular farm we frequent buys New Holland equipment exclusively. They had one on display as a promo for a local dealer. As I was looking at the brand new machine my wife informed me that I should have bought "the blue one" instead of "the orange one" because it was a "prettier color". Sheesh.

Sound advice, certainly. However, I can attest that a BX does not have enough mass to effectively damage even a lightweight rear blade. It will lose traction first, guaranteed. The lift arms are so short and stubby I'd be more worried about damaging the 3PH subframe. Of course this says nothing of whiplash!

How much acreage will you be mowing? What kind of terrain? I see ground clearance, tire size, and weight as the biggest advantages of the B-series over the BX. But the BX is more manueverable, an advantage in mowing. HP will not be a concern for mowing and unless you want to run a wide tiller over large area, the HP diff between the 2230 and 7800 shouldn't be something to worry about. IMHO both machines are overpowered for their size.

It's all about what you will be doing with the machine. If you are simply pulling or pushing an implement, engine HP is less of a concern while size and weight is a bigger issue. Most tractors will run out of traction long before they run out of power. If you are running a power hungry PTO driven attachement such as a tiller or brush hog or a lot of hydraulics then HP becomes a more important factor. One isn't better than the other, it's all about what you need.

I'm out in Amissville just west of Warrenton. I drive past McMichael's every day to and from work but I deal with Pullen's down in Culpeper. R.C. (owner) is a great guy to do business with. Didn't get the same feeling at McMichael's. There is a lot of tractor inventory (orange, blue, green and red) between Warrenton and Culpeper. I have to wonder where it all goes!

I have Woods skid shoes on my 5' King Kutter (see my photos). There are no shims for angle adjustment, only holes for height changes. The top link can be used to change the blade and corresponding skid shoe angle depending on whether you are pulling or pushing. You should be able to find a "happy medium" that works in either direction.

I had the same problem on my BX1500 before the first 50 hr service. The dealer indicated that it was a known problem and took care of it under warrenty. Jimbrown, I wouldn't leave the bracket broken. The vibration of the engine will surely cause fatigue or abrasion failures elsewhere if the air cleaner is not secured. Besides, it should be under warrenty and even if it isn't, any reputable dealer should agree to fix it for free since it is a known design defect. Kubota is very aware of their reputation for quality, they don't want a $5 problem to sour customer relations.

CUT = Compact Utility Tractor (i.e. the Kubota B-series and L-Series)
Sub-CUT = Subcompact Utility Tractor (i.e. the Kubota BX-series)
An implement refers to any attachment (i.e. a mower, snowblower, rear blade, etc.)
Subcomact implements are specifically sized to match the limited Catagory-1 3-point hitches on subcampact tractors. Some standard sized Cat-1 implements are too big for a sub-CUT.

King Kutter quality is low compared with other brands, but you can't possibly hurt their scoop with a BX. Just not enough tractor mass. I moved 25 cu yds of mulch and 20 tons of 1" gravel with mine. Very economical alternative to a FEL (although limited).

My neighbor has an M5700 (one model smaller than the 6800) with a similar setup to yours. I haven't heard of any problems whatsoever. It is definitely a well built machine, and very quiet too.

Where would I find information about the proper geometry for a cat-1 implement? I am working on a home-built design and I would like to get the geometry correct (rather than the measure and guess method).
