I know I saw a previous post on this subject, but I cannot find it now. I have a 4300 HST and the forward and reverse pedals are hard to depress. Not unbearable but hard. I think the remedy was to lube under the pedals, but I cannot see where. Any more detailed info on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.Jim

I occasionally have the same problem with my JD855. Usually the problem is that the parking brake has not fully released. I just need to reapply and re-release the parking brake to get the hydro pedals to work freely. Also, I noticed once that an overfill on the hydro fluid caused very stiff hydro pedals. Jim,I've got a similar problem w/ my JD4200 hydro. I'm now starting to walk with a limp. The manual says there are two grease fittings under the pedals. I can only find one. A previous post said the manual was wrong and there is only one. If you find anything that helps, please let me know. My pediatrist and I thank you in advance. Best of Luck. ....

Jim,I cannot speak for the 4300, but the 4100's "manual" shows the various lube points relatively well. Through the use of B&W pictures. Again, I cannot speak for the 4300, but the 4100 uses individual springs for returning the forward & reverse pedals, back to their "neutral" position. For some, it may be adventagious to look into weaker springs,thus allowing for less return tension. One important note to mention, when choosing a weaker spring, it is important to remember that dirt will tend to slow the return, and eventually a weaker spring may not have enought tension for a proper return. But something that may be worth checking into if you still feel its necessary after a proper lube job:o) ....

This is known problem with the 4000 series. I spoke with a chief designer at a trade show and he said the dealer is supposed to clip out 1 or 2 loops in the return spring on the pedal. Don't do it yourself because too much means you have to put a new spring in because the pedal will not return when released causing a carryon effect. Hope this helps. It did with my 4400. ....

Your 'chief designer' needs to review what result shortening the return spring will have. Shortening the return spring will INCREASE the effort required to extend the spring, adding to the complaint, not lessening it. No major manufacturer would screw around altering a cheap part like a spring. If a problem such as this were encountered, and a different spring rate was determined to be the solution, then a new spring would be designed & put into production, & hopefully retro-fitted to prior units. ....

maybe if it we not a compression spring. this is exactly what they did to mine and i watched them do it. so maybe you should check with your major manufacturer. ....
